How to Choose an Engagement Ring in Dubai: Seven Decisions

Many people choosing an engagement ring in Dubai start with the diamond and fit everything else around it. The calmer order is close to the one our ring designer follows: shape and setting, then carat, gold colour, lab-grown or natural, ring size, and only then the price. One decision comes before all of them.

Decide the total first

Settle one figure for the whole ring, gold and setting included, before you look at a stone. A halo or Marquise Shoulders adds diamonds of its own; a solitaire puts nearly everything into the centre.

Inside that total, you trade carat against grades. Keep the cut high, because it decides the sparkle; colour and clarity can often drop a step before the eye notices. Prices tend to step up at the whole carat, yet a 0.90 ct round is about 6.3 mm across, against 6.5 mm at 1.00 ct. Our guide to the 4Cs explains each grade.

1. Shape: start with her hand

Shape comes first because it changes how large every carat looks. Oval, pear, marquise, emerald and radiant stones lie along the finger and lengthen it, which flatters shorter fingers. Round and cushion suit almost any hand, and a round brilliant usually sparkles most. An emerald cut shows the inside of the stone, so it asks for a cleaner diamond. 2. Setting: match it to her week

The designer offers five:

• Solitaire. One diamond on a slim band: easiest to clean and to pair with a wedding band.
• Pavé. Small diamonds along the band: more sparkle, more cleaning.
• Halo. A frame of diamonds that makes the centre look larger.
• Three Stone. The centre between two side stones, for more presence.
• Marquise Shoulders. Our signature: eight marquise diamonds along the shoulders.

If she works with her hands or washes them often, as many here do before prayer, a simpler setting traps less soap and sand. Claws need a yearly check: bring the ring in and we will look at the settings. Try Marquise Shoulders with a 1.00 ct oval in yellow gold, then switch settings.

3. Carat: the size she will see

Carat is weight, and face-up size grows more slowly: doubling a round from 1.00 to 2.00 ct makes it only about 26% wider. Longer shapes spread the weight further. These sizes are approximate; real stones vary with their cut.

4. Gold colour: follow her jewellery

Every designer ring is 18K: 75% gold, stamped 750 and hard enough to hold a diamond. Let her everyday jewellery choose the colour. Yellow sits beside the 21K and 22K gold many families give at a wedding. White makes a diamond look whitest, but it is rhodium plated and needs re-plating in time. Rose is the warmest. 5. Lab-grown or natural

Both are diamond, with the same crystal, hardness and fire, and a standard diamond tester cannot tell them apart: that takes a gem laboratory. They differ in origin, rarity and price. Lab-grown, the designer's default, buys more carat or better grades for the same total. A natural one is usually more than a billion years old, which for some is the point. Buy either to wear, not as an investment.

Either way, ask whether the stone has a grading report and from which laboratory, check that any girdle inscription matches the report number, and make sure the invoice says laboratory-grown where it applies. More in our lab-grown and natural comparison.

6. Her ring size, found quietly

Borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger and measure the inside diameter: about 16.5 mm is a UAE size 52, a UK L½ or a US 6. Or ask a sister or friend who knows. Our ring size guide has the method.

In many families here, the ring is worn on the right hand at the engagement and moves to the left at the wedding. Size the hand that wears it first, measuring in the evening, when heat swells fingers. Unsure? Choose "Not sure yet" and give us the size before the ring is finished. The first resizing is free, though diamonds along a band limit it.

7. Engraving, then the quote

Engraving is optional: up to 15 characters inside the band, enough for initials and a date. The designer writes it out with a code such as MZ-SOL-OV-100-YG-L, ready to send to us on WhatsApp. We reply with the price, daily from 10:00 to 22:00.

• The paperwork: any grading report, the inscription, the invoice wording.

Questions we hear at the counter

How much should I spend? No rule is worth following, least of all months of salary. Choose a total, design within it, and we quote that exact ring.

Is it acceptable to propose with a lab-grown diamond? Yes. It is a diamond; what matters is that the invoice, and any grading report, describe it as laboratory-grown.

Should we choose it together? Many do: one settles the shape and gold, then sends the design link to the other.
