Marquise vs Oval Engagement Ring: Size, Wear, Sparkle
Marquise vs oval engagement ring: at 1 ct the marquise is 2.8 mm longer and the oval has no points to protect. Sizes in mm, bow-tie, wedding band, price.

Choose a marquise for the longest line your carat weight can buy, and an oval for a long, flattering stone with no points to look after. At 1 ct our designer draws a marquise at about 10.5 × 5.2 mm and an oval at about 7.7 × 5.7 mm: the marquise is 2.8 mm longer, 0.5 mm narrower and covers about 10% more face-up area. Both are brilliant cuts; what separates them is length, the two points and the wedding band.
At a glance
- Length: a 1 ct marquise is about 36% longer than a 1 ct oval; an oval needs about 2.5 ct to match it.
- Area: a 1.15 ct oval covers about the same as a 1 ct marquise.
- Wear: an oval has no points; a marquise needs a claw or V-prong over each tip.
- Ratio: GIA calls 1.40 to 1.50 the most popular range for an oval and advises 1.75 to 2.25 for a marquise.
- Bow-tie: both show one, so judge the exact stone on video.
Marquise vs oval size chart: 1 to 3 ct in mm
The oval and marquise columns below come from our diamond size chart. Each figure is face-up length × width in millimetres, with length running along the finger, and real stones vary, so read it as "about". Area is taken from the outlines our designer draws.
| Carat | Oval | Marquise | Extra length | Area, oval / marquise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.00 ct | 7.7 × 5.7 mm | 10.5 × 5.2 mm | 2.8 mm | 34.5 / 38.1 mm² |
| 1.50 ct | 8.8 × 6.5 mm | 12.0 × 6.0 mm | 3.2 mm | 45.2 / 49.9 mm² |
| 2.00 ct | 9.7 × 7.2 mm | 13.2 × 6.6 mm | 3.5 mm | 54.7 / 60.5 mm² |
| 3.00 ct | 11.1 × 8.2 mm | 15.1 × 7.5 mm | 4.0 mm | 71.7 / 79.2 mm² |
At every weight the marquise is about 36% longer, 9% narrower and 10% larger in area. Our marquise guide sets the shape against the round; our oval vs pear guide sets the oval against the pear.
Which looks bigger: marquise or oval?
It depends on the direction. Along the finger the marquise wins easily: an oval would have to weigh about 2.5 ct to match a 1 ct marquise's 10.5 mm, and would then be 7.8 mm wide. In area the gap is small: a 1.15 ct oval, about 8.1 × 6.0 mm, covers about the same as a 1 ct marquise.
Across a UAE size 52 finger (about 16.5 mm) a 1 ct marquise spans about 32% of the width and an oval about 35%, so the marquise draws the slimmer line. GIA's oval and marquise guides both mention a lengthening, slimming effect on the finger.

Real stones move the numbers. Worked out the same way, these two centre stones cover about 49 mm² (marquise) and 47 mm² (oval), because this oval is cut longer than our designer's: 1.46 against 1.35. Our oval engagement ring guide sets that 1.35 against the ratios of the oval rings we make.
Length-to-width ratio: what to look for
Divide length by width. GIA's oval guide gives 1.30 to 1.40 for a gently elongated look and 1.40 to 1.50 as the most popular range, and says ovals above 1.50 are rarely seen and may show a pronounced bow-tie. For the marquise, GIA's marquise guide says about 2:1 is common and submitted stones most often run 1.6 to 2.2; its fancy-shape guide advises 1.75 to 2.25. A shorter marquise can look stubby; a much longer one is harder to cut well.
| Ring | Centre diamond | Size | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim Marquise Solitaire Ring | Marquise, 1.5 ct | 12.58 × 5.85 mm | 2.15 |
| Marquise Solitaire Ring | Marquise, 2 ct | 11.70 × 5.98 mm | 1.96 |
| Marquise Cluster Ring | Marquise, 2.5 ct | 12.17 × 6.74 mm | 1.81 |
| Oval Cluster Ring | Oval, 2 ct | 10.21 × 7.00 mm | 1.46 |
| Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 1.5 ct | Oval, 1.5 ct | 9.39 × 6.41 mm | 1.46 |
Every stone above sits inside GIA's range for its shape. Symmetry matters too: each half of a marquise should mirror the other, with both points on one straight line. Ask for the measurements and divide yourself; our guide to diamond reports shows where to find them.
Sparkle and the bow-tie
Both cuts are brilliant, so what differs is the bow-tie, the darker band across the middle. GIA says an oval always shows some, and that marquise diamonds typically do too, from light grey to black. GIA gives a cut grade only to round brilliants, so no grade on a report predicts it. Ask to see the exact stone on video in daylight, turned slowly. A dark band that moves or fades with the angle is normal; one that stays put from every direction is a reason to ask for another stone.
Two points to protect, or none
GIA's oval guide says the smooth, rounded edges of an oval make chipping less likely than on sharp-cornered shapes, and it names the marquise as one of them. A marquise tip is thin, and one knock from a car door or a gym bar can chip it. The answer is metal over each tip. GIA's fancy-shape guide says V-shaped prongs help protect the points. A bezel covers them completely but hides some of the outline. Our Marquise Solitaire Ring has six claws, one over each tip and two along each side, while our Oval Pavé Solitaire Rings have four.

The Mazimo warranty repairs a setting that fails through a manufacturing defect, free of charge, and lists an annual settings check on diamond pieces. Accidental damage is excluded, and a tip chipped on a door frame falls under that. If you cannot choose, the Oval Marquise Shoulders Ring sets a 2 ct oval with four small marquise diamonds along each shoulder, so one ring carries both shapes.
On the finger and beside a wedding band
Our designer draws both stones lengthways, along the finger. An oval or a marquise can also be set east-west, across the finger; that is a bespoke request. Our wedding band guide says a straight band sits close to an oval or leaves a small gap, and usually leaves a gap beside a marquise, so a V-shaped or contoured band is the usual answer. Settle the band before you approve the ring.
Price: compare quotes, not shapes
The shape alone does not set the price; the exact stone does. Weight, colour, clarity, cut and whether the diamond is lab grown or natural all move it. What the shape changes is how much carat you need for a look, so if you buy for size on the hand, ask for a quote on each shape at the size you want to see, not at the same weight.
Our listings show why a quick comparison misleads. The Marquise Solitaire Ring is listed at AED 8,900 on its page on 8 October 2026 and the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 1.5 ct at AED 9,540, but they are different rings: the oval also carries 0.4 ct of small diamonds on the band. Each was the price shown on its page that day, and Mazimo confirms the current price on WhatsApp for the metal and diamonds you choose.
When this is not the right choice
- Not a marquise if your hands are rarely still. If you lift weights, work with tools or catch rings on sleeves and gloves, two exposed tips meet every knock. Choose an oval, or a marquise in a halo, which shelters the tips (our settings guide compares all five settings).
- Not an oval if you want the longest line from a modest weight. At 1 ct it is 2.8 mm shorter, and no setting changes that.
- Neither if the bow-tie bothers you, or if long, slim fingers want width: a round brilliant has no bow-tie, and round and cushion stones add width rather than length.
How to choose in four steps
- Compare on the hand. Open a 1 ct marquise and then a 1.15 ct oval in our ring designer, one after the other, both drawn at true scale. Most diamond-ring pages (35 of our 48) also offer "Try it on with your camera", a close drawing, not a photograph of the exact ring; the 13 without it are all the bezel, bypass and signet designs, plus four others.
- Check the ratio. Length divided by width, from the report, against the ranges above.
- Watch the bow-tie on video, and ask what covers each point.
- Plan the band and size together. Sizes run 46 to 62 and the first resizing is free, though pavé set all round limits resizing, so fix the size before the ring is made.

Which looks bigger, a marquise or an oval?
The marquise looks longer and the oval fuller. At 1 ct the marquise is about 2.8 mm longer and 0.5 mm narrower, with about 10% more face-up area in our designer's outlines.
Is a marquise more fragile than an oval?
Only at its two points. GIA says an oval's rounded edges make it less prone to chipping than sharp-cornered shapes such as the marquise, and that V-shaped prongs help protect a marquise's points.
Which has the worse bow-tie, a marquise or an oval?
Neither is free of it. GIA says an oval always shows some and a marquise typically does, so judge the exact stone on video.
Is a marquise cheaper than an oval?
Not by shape alone. The exact stone's weight, colour, clarity, cut and lab grown or natural origin decide the price, so only a quote for each stone is a fair comparison.
An oval with a bypass band and small marquise diamonds is one of the designs in our ten new diamond rings.
