Solitaires with something extra: bezel, six claw and pavé

A solitaire is one centre diamond that leads the ring. These three add small diamonds beneath it, and the pavé ring adds more along the band.

Oval Bezel Solitaire Ring

The Oval Bezel Solitaire Ring sets a 1.5 ct oval low in a smooth bezel, with 25 small round diamonds in a ring just beneath it: 26 diamonds and 1.5 ct in all.

In a bezel set diamond ring the metal wraps the edge of the stone instead of claws holding it from above. The rim covers a little of the edge and the stone sits lower, but there are no raised claw tips, which suits a smooth, modern look. Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring

The Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring holds a 2 ct round of about 8.0 mm in six slim claws, with six small marquise diamonds in the gallery between them: seven diamonds and 2.5 ct in all.

From the front it reads as a plain solitaire, and the marquise stones show from the side. Six claws put more points of metal round the stone than four do, which some people find busier. The six claw and round pavé ring pages both have the camera try-on.

Round Pavé Solitaire Ring

The Round Pavé Solitaire Ring puts a 2 ct round in four claws, with 168 small round diamonds pavé set along the band and beneath the centre: 169 diamonds and 2.5 ct in all.

The band sparkles along its length. The trade-off is upkeep: 168 small stones mean more surfaces to keep clean, and cleaning at the boutique is complimentary.

Side stone rings: five stone, emerald cut and baguette, bypass

Stones at the sides widen the top of the ring and frame the centre. This group has two oval diamond rings with side stones, an emerald cut diamond ring with baguettes and an oval bypass.

Oval and Pear Five Stone Ring

The Oval and Pear Five Stone Ring is a 2.5 ct oval in four claws with two pears on each shoulder, a larger one of about 6.0 by 4.0 mm and a smaller one of about 4.5 by 3.0 mm, stepping down away from the oval: five claw-set diamonds and 3.5 ct in all.

It looks wider and fuller than a solitaire and suits a decorated design led by the oval. Every stone is claw set, so there are more claws to look after.

Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring

The Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring sets a 2 ct emerald-cut diamond of about 8.8 by 5.9 mm in four claws, with a tapered baguette on each side: three diamonds and 2.5 ct in all.

Oval Hidden Halo Shoulders Ring

The Oval Hidden Halo Shoulders Ring has the largest centre diamond here, a 3.5 ct oval of about 11.8 by 8.2 mm in four claws. Twelve round diamonds run along the shoulders and 22 tiny ones sit beneath the oval: 35 diamonds and 4 ct in all.

Oval Marquise Bypass Ring

The Oval Marquise Bypass Ring has a claw-set oval of about 9.6 by 6.4 mm and about 1.5 ct. The band sweeps past the stone instead of closing round it, with small marquise diamonds following the sweep on each side and small rounds in a row beneath the oval.

Broad rings: radiant signet, baguette signet and emerald faceted

These three put one diamond on a broad band, set sideways so its long side runs across the finger, and are made to order in your own size. The signet ring guide covers finger, shape and engraving.

Radiant Signet Ring

The Radiant Signet Ring is a diamond signet ring with one stone, a 2.5 ct radiant cut of about 9.1 by 6.2 mm, set sideways and flush in a stepped, flat-topped frame with angled corners.

Flush means level with the metal, with no claws. A radiant cut is a rectangle with trimmed corners and brilliant-style facets, so it flashes more than a step cut. It suits a strong, simple ring built around one large diamond.

Baguette Signet Ring

The Baguette Signet Ring sets a straight 1.5 ct baguette of about 8.3 by 4.1 mm sideways and flush in a flat-topped frame, on a heavy, broad band that narrows underneath. A baguette is a slim step-cut rectangle, so this ring is about line more than sparkle, and it carries less diamond than the radiant signet.

Emerald Faceted Ring

The Emerald Faceted Ring has one emerald-cut diamond, 1.5 ct and about 7.8 by 5.5 mm, set sideways in four claws on a broad band whose shoulders are cut into sharp pyramid facets. How to choose between the ten rings

• Pick the look first. A solitaire with small extra stones, a wider design with side stones or a broad band.
• Compare millimetres. The hidden halo oval is about 11.8 by 8.2 mm, the five stone oval 10.7 by 7.1 mm and the bezel oval 8.2 by 5.6 mm; a 2 ct round is about 8.0 mm across.
