Engagement Ring Settings Compared on the Same Diamond

Most people choose the diamond first, then find the setting decides how big it looks, how it sparkles, how the wedding band sits and how much care it needs. Our ring designer offers five settings: solitaire, pavé, halo, three stone and Mazimo's own Marquise Shoulders. Every designer link below loads the same 1.00 ct lab-grown oval in 18K yellow gold, about 7.7 × 5.7 mm, at true scale on a UAE size 52 finger, so only the setting changes.

Solitaire: the stone does the work

One diamond held in claws on a slim, polished band. Nothing competes with the centre: you see about 7.7 × 5.7 mm and no more, though a slim band makes any stone look a little bolder.

The claws alone hold it and take every knock, so check them yearly. Upkeep is the lightest here, the plain band resizes easily, and a straight wedding band usually sits close. It suits busy hands and quiet taste. See the solitaire with a 1 ct oval.

Pavé: light along the band

The same centre on a band set with small diamonds, usually held by tiny beads of gold. Pavé does not enlarge the centre, but it carries sparkle down the finger, so the ring looks brighter from every angle: the choice for more sparkle without a heavier centre.

The centre is held as in the solitaire; the risk moves to the small stones, which a hard knock can loosen. Soap and hand cream settle between them, so clean it often, and full pavé that runs all round limits resizing. Halo: the most spread and sparkle

A frame of small diamonds around the centre, and the biggest change in apparent size. In our designer the single row adds roughly a millimetre on every side, so the whole head measures about 9.7 × 7.7 mm, a footprint close to a 2.00 ct oval on its own (about 9.7 × 7.2 mm). The frame shields the centre's edge, but its small stones need watching. In our designer the halo sits on a pavé band, so it needs the most cleaning and the closest yearly check, and a straight band may leave a small gap. Three Stone: width, and a story

The centre diamond between two smaller side stones, reading across the finger rather than along it. Smaller neighbours make the centre look larger by comparison, and many couples choose it for its meaning: past, present and future.

The side stones take some knocks before the centre does, and there are only three stones to check and no pavé. The wide head can hold a straight band slightly apart. It tends to suit longer fingers. See the three stone with a 1 ct oval.

Marquise Shoulders: the Mazimo signature

Our own setting: the centre in claws, with eight marquise diamonds along the shoulders, where the band rises to the head. They lead the eye to the centre and add presence without a halo's width, so the stone keeps its true size.

Each marquise has two fine points, its most fragile part, so have them checked with the claws yearly and wear a plain band beside them. It flatters oval, pear and marquise centres. See Marquise Shoulders with a 1 ct oval.

Living with it in Dubai

Sand, sunscreen, hand cream and the soap from frequent hand washing leave a film that dulls diamonds, and small stones collect it first.

• Clean gently. Warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush, weekly for pavé and halo. No toothpaste, baking soda or ultrasonic cleaners.
• Check yearly. Bring the ring in once a year for a check of the settings; cleaning and polishing are complimentary for life.
• Plan the band now. Our wedding band guide covers matching and flush fit.
• Get the size right. The designer takes UAE sizes 46 to 62 (size 52 is about 16.5 mm inside diameter), and our ring size guide converts the others. The first resizing of any Mazimo ring is free, but full pavé limits it, so settle the size before we make it.

Questions we hear at the counter

Four claws or six? Four show more of the diamond; six hold it more securely and make a round look rounder, and if one breaks, five still hold. Pear and marquise need a claw at each point to protect it. The yearly check matters more than the count.

Is a halo cheaper than a bigger solitaire? It can be, since the spread comes from small stones rather than a heavier centre. Build a 1.00 ct halo and a 2.00 ct solitaire, send both on WhatsApp and we will quote them side by side.

Which setting is most secure? For the centre stone, a halo or three stone helps, since the frame or the side stones take knocks first, though claws still do the holding. For the whole ring, the solitaire, with the fewest stones to look after.
