Cluster Engagement Rings: How They Differ From a Halo
Cluster engagement rings in Dubai: how small diamonds beside the centre stone differ from a halo, how wide they wear and who they suit.

A cluster engagement ring groups small diamonds together so they read as one larger stone or a decorative shape. Our two cluster rings keep a real centre stone and put three 2.00 mm diamonds on each side of it, so the ring looks wider and brighter without a heavier diamond. A cluster suits anyone who wants more presence than a solitaire and will accept a few more small stones to look after.
At a glance
- What it is: small diamonds grouped to read as one larger shape; on our rings, a group each side of a real centre diamond.
- Against a halo: a halo rings the centre stone; our clusters sit in groups at its sides and leave the centre's outline clear.
- Our rings: the Oval Cluster Ring (2 ct centre) and the Marquise Cluster Ring (2.5 ct centre), each with six round diamonds of 2.00 mm, 0.2 ct in all.
- The trade-off: six small stones to clean and have checked every year, and a head that may hold a straight wedding band slightly apart.
Two kinds of cluster ring
The classic cluster has no single dominant diamond: small stones are arranged so that together they read as one larger stone or a decorative shape, sometimes a flower. GIA's guide to ring settings lists it beside the halo and the three-stone as a style of its own.
The second kind keeps a real centre diamond and tucks a small group on each side of it: a solitaire's calm with a little more width. That is what our cluster rings are. A classic flower cluster is bespoke work, so bring a picture to a private appointment.

Cluster, halo, three stone and solitaire compared
| Setting | Where the small stones sit | Effect on the look | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solitaire | None: one stone on a plain band | The centre as it is | Lowest |
| Halo | In a ring all round the centre | Makes the centre look larger | High: many small stones |
| Three stone | Two larger stones, one each side | Width across the finger | Three stones to check |
| Cluster | In small groups: on each side of the centre in our rings, or as the whole top | Width and fine sparkle; beside a centre stone, the centre keeps its true size | Many small stones to clean and check (six on ours) |
The practical difference from a halo is where the sparkle goes. A halo frames the stone and makes it look bigger; a cluster like ours leaves the outline clear and adds weight to the sides. Our engagement ring settings guide compares solitaire, pavé, halo, three stone and Marquise Shoulders on one diamond.
How wide a cluster ring wears
The centre diamond of our Oval Cluster Ring is about 10.21 × 7.00 mm. On a UAE size 52 finger, about 16.5 mm across, 7.00 mm covers about 42% of the width. Measured on the ring's drawing, all seven diamonds together span roughly 13 mm, about four fifths of the finger. The Marquise Cluster Ring does the same for a slimmer stone: a centre of about 12.17 × 6.74 mm covers about 41% of the finger alone, and the whole head, roughly 13.5 mm, about 80%. We scaled each drawing from the length of its centre stone, so read these as approximate.
The width costs little weight. The six small diamonds weigh 0.2 ct of the oval ring's 2.5 ct, under 9%. A cluster builds width, not carats: the centre still does the work, so size it with our diamond size chart in carats and millimetres.

Two ways to spread the small stones
A triangle of three on each side
This is the Oval Cluster Ring and the Marquise Cluster Ring. Each small diamond is about 0.03 ct, held in small claws and sitting lower than the centre stone. On the oval the result is calm and balanced. On the marquise it widens a long, slim stone near its middle, with a claw over each point; our marquise engagement ring guide explains why the points need that.
Leaves along the shoulders
The Marquise Leaf Shoulders Ring spreads its small stones out instead: four small marquise diamonds of 4.60 × 2.20 mm and four rounds of 2.20 mm, set into the shoulders around a 2 ct marquise. Nine diamonds, 2 ct in all. It reads as a branch of leaves rather than a tight group.

How many stones, and how big
- Count: three a side is where our rings stop. Two a side is calmer; more at this size would crowd a 7 mm centre.
- Size: keep small stones clearly smaller than the centre. Ours are 2.00 mm beside a centre 7.00 mm wide, under a third.
- Match: face up, the small diamonds should look as white and bright as the centre. Compare them in daylight.
- Mirror: both sides should hold the same number of stones, of the same size and at the same height.
What small stones ask of you
GIA calls diamonds under a fifth of a carat melee, and these are about 0.03 ct each. Small stones are where a ring collects dirt and where a hard knock does damage.
- Clean gently. Soap, sunscreen and hand cream settle between small stones first. GIA's cleaning advice includes warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, a soft toothbrush kept only for jewellery, and not cleaning near an open drain. We add one rule: no ultrasonic cleaners on set stones. Our diamond ring cleaning guide gives the full routine and a push test for loose claws.
- Bring it in once a year. Our lifetime warranty includes complimentary cleaning and an annual check of the settings on diamond pieces. It covers manufacturing defects; wear and accidental damage are excluded, so a knock that bends a claw is not covered.
- Plan the band first. Claws and side stones can hold a straight wedding band slightly away from the ring. Our wedding band guide shows the flush, gap and contoured fits.
- Read the paperwork. GIA notes that melee colour and clarity grades are usually broad, such as "face up white" and "eye clean", so a grading report on the centre stone, where there is one, does not describe each small diamond. Ask the invoice to state the count, size and total weight of the small diamonds, as our pages do, and whether each is lab grown or natural.
The band carries no stones, so it does not meet the resizing limit that full pavé does. Each ring is made to order in UAE sizes 46 to 62, and the first resizing is free.
Who a cluster ring suits
It suits someone who wants more presence than a solitaire without a frame round the stone: the small diamonds add width across the finger, which helps a long, slim marquise as much as an oval. It also suits a buyer who will bring the ring in once a year for a check.
When a cluster ring is not the right choice
Choose a solitaire if you want the lowest upkeep: it has no small stones for soap and sand to settle around. Choose it too if your hands knock things most days, since a cluster has more small claws to catch on sleeves, hair and a shayla. If you want the biggest stone you can have, put the budget into the centre; side stones add width, not carats. And if a straight wedding band must sit flush, plan a contoured band or pick a lower setting.
Our cluster and leaf rings
Each is made to order in 18K white, yellow or rose gold. Our ring designer does not draw clusters, so judge them from the photographs on each page, then use "Try it on with your camera": it draws a close match at the size you choose, not a photograph of the exact ring. To see one on your hand, book a viewing in Deira.

What is a cluster engagement ring?
It is a ring with small diamonds grouped together, either as the whole top or beside a centre stone. In the version we make, a large centre diamond sits between two groups of three small round diamonds.
Is a cluster ring the same as a halo?
They are different settings. A halo is a defined setting, one ring of small diamonds all round the centre stone that makes it look larger. A cluster is a looser grouping, and in our rings a group on each side adds width beside the centre.
Is a cluster ring strong enough for an engagement ring?
Yes, with the care any ring with small stones needs. Clean it gently, avoid hard knocks and bring it in once a year for a check of the claws.
How do I clean a cluster ring?
Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, and rinse over a bowl rather than an open drain. We advise against ultrasonic cleaners on set stones; bring the ring to Deira for a complimentary clean.
How much does a cluster engagement ring cost in Dubai?
It depends on the diamonds and the gold you choose, and our cluster rings are price on request. Tap "Get the price on WhatsApp" on a ring's page, and for a fair comparison build an oval solitaire of about the same weight in our ring designer and send that too.
At Mazimo. Choose a cluster ring and its gold colour on its page and send the price request on WhatsApp, or come and see stones and settings at Al Manal Center, Deira, a few minutes' walk from the Gold Souk.
