Oval vs Pear Engagement Ring: Size, Sparkle and Wear

Oval or pear? At the same carat the pear is about 10% longer, yet both cover about the same face-up area. Sizes in mm, bow-tie, the point and settings.

Oval and pear diamond solitaire rings in yellow gold side by side on white marble above a steel ruler

Choose an oval for the easier everyday ring and a pear for the more distinctive one. At the same carat weight the two cover about the same face-up area: the pear is about 10% longer and a little narrower, the oval is fuller, and only the pear has a point to protect.

Both are long brilliant cuts, and of our 48 ready-made diamond rings, 20 have an oval centre and 3 a pear. Our diamond shapes guide covers all eight shapes in our designer; this is the head-to-head. For the marquise against the oval, read our marquise vs oval engagement ring comparison.

Size side by side: 0.50 to 3.00 ct in mm

These are the oval and pear columns of our diamond size chart in carats and mm: face-up length × width in millimetres, length along the finger. Real stones vary with their cut, so read each figure as "about".

CaratOvalPearPear's extra length
0.50 ct6.1 × 4.56.7 × 4.40.6 mm
0.75 ct7.0 × 5.27.7 × 5.00.7 mm
1.00 ct7.7 × 5.78.5 × 5.50.8 mm
1.50 ct8.8 × 6.59.7 × 6.30.9 mm
2.00 ct9.7 × 7.210.7 × 6.91.0 mm
3.00 ct11.1 × 8.212.3 × 7.91.2 mm

The pear is longer at every weight, by about 10%, and about 3.5% narrower (0.2 mm at 1 ct).

Which looks bigger: oval or pear?

Neither wins on area; they win in different directions. Taken from the outlines our designer draws, a 1 ct oval covers about 34.5 mm² face-up and a 1 ct pear about 33.9 mm², within 2% of each other and a little over the 33.2 mm² of a 1 ct round. That compares the shapes, not any one stone.

What the eye reads is direction. At 1 ct the pear is as long as a 1.35 ct oval, though that oval would also be about 0.8 mm wider. The pear carries its weight in the rounded end and tapers to the point, so its extra length is the thinnest part of the stone, while the oval looks fuller. On a UAE size 52 finger, about 16.5 mm across, a 1 ct oval covers about 35% of the width and a pear about 33%, against 39% for a round.

The length-to-width ratio

Divide length by width. GIA's oval guide suggests 1.30 to 1.40 for a more rounded look and 1.40 to 1.50 for a more traditional one, and calls the second the most popular range. Its pear guide says many experts prefer about 1.50 to 1.75, while others in the trade feel a ratio cannot convey a stone's beauty. Take them as guidance, not a rule. Our designer's stones are 1.35 (7.7 ÷ 5.7) and 1.55 (8.5 ÷ 5.5), each inside GIA's range for its shape.

Real stones differ: the pear in our Pear Halo Pavé Ring is about 9 × 5.7 mm (1.58) and the oval in our Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring about 10.5 × 7.3 mm (1.45). A grading report lists the measurements, so ask for them and divide. Our oval engagement ring guide does that division for each oval ring we make.

Sparkle and the bow-tie

Both are brilliant cuts and sparkle much as a round does. The difference is the bow-tie, a dark band across the middle of the stone. GIA's oval guide explains it as your own head and shoulders blocking part of the light as you look, and says some bow-tie is always present in an oval. Its pear guide adds that the shadow darkens as the gap between length and width grows. A long, narrow pear is therefore the likelier of the two to show a strong one, though in either shape the cut decides.

GIA gives only round diamonds a cut grade, as our guide to the 4Cs explains, so no grade tells you how a fancy shape will look. Our diamond cut grade guide sets out what to check when a shape has none. Ask for a video of the exact stone and watch the middle as it tilts: a shadow that comes and goes is normal, one that stays dark from every angle is worth questioning.

The pear's point: protection and knocks

The point is the pear's one real weakness, so how it is covered decides how a pear is set. GIA calls it the most vulnerable part of the stone, one that can chip, and suggests a V-prong over the tip or a bezel around the whole stone. Our bezel versus prong guide compares the two settings. An oval has no point, and GIA says its smooth, rounded edges make it less prone to chipping.

A pear solitaire needs a claw or V-prong at the tip. A halo is another answer: our Pear Halo Pavé Ring surrounds the point with a halo of 21 diamonds, and our Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring covers it with a claw. Before you approve any pear, ask what covers the point. Our warranty covers manufacturing defects in settings and includes a yearly check of them, but excludes accidental damage, which is what a tip chipped on a door frame would be.

On the finger and beside a wedding band

Both shapes run along the finger, so both suit short or wide hands. GIA says the traditional way to wear a pear is with the tip pointing away from you, towards the fingertip, which many in the trade say makes the finger look more slender; it is how our designer draws it. Some brides choose the point towards the hand instead.

The wedding band meets the end of the stone nearest the hand. Our wedding band guide puts a straight band beside an oval solitaire at close or a small gap, and beside a pear at often a gap, which is why a curved band is usually suggested. If the point faces the hand, choose a contoured band made to follow it.

Settings that suit each

  • Solitaire. The plainest view of the stone: claws for an oval, plus a claw or V-prong at the tip for a pear.
  • Halo. The frame follows the outline and, on a pear, shelters the point. Our Pear Halo Pavé Ring sets a 1 ct pear inside 21 diamonds; the Oval Halo Pavé Ring a 1 ct oval inside 22.
  • Hidden halo. Small diamonds under the crown, seen from the side. Our Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring has a 2 ct oval, about 10.5 × 7.3 mm, over a hidden halo of 22 small diamonds.
  • Three stone. Our Oval and Pear Three Stone Ring puts a 2 ct oval between two pear diamonds, 0.9 ct together, their points turned outward.
  • Marquise shoulders. Our signature setting. The pointed marquise diamonds echo a pear's tip: three on each shoulder of the Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring, four on the Oval Marquise Shoulders Ring.
  • Cluster. Three small round diamonds on each side of the centre, as on our Oval Cluster Ring: width without a frame, and the centre stays at its true size. Our cluster engagement ring guide explains how it differs from a halo.

Price, and how to choose

Price follows the 4Cs and the quote for the exact stone, and lab grown and natural diamonds are priced differently (see our lab grown and natural comparison). For a side-by-side quote, send us an oval design and a pear design at the same weight. Then:

  1. Compare at one weight, on the hand: in our ring designer, a 1 ct oval solitaire in yellow gold, then the same ring with the pear shape picked, both drawn at true scale.
  2. Divide length by width on the report and check it against the ranges above.
  3. Judge the bow-tie on video, as the stone tilts.
  4. Ask what covers the point, if it is a pear.
  5. Plan the band: straight, curved or contoured.

Questions people ask

Which looks bigger, an oval or a pear?

The pear looks longer and the oval fuller; at the same weight their face-up areas are within about 2% of each other.

Is a pear shaped engagement ring more fragile than an oval?

Only at the point, which GIA calls the most vulnerable part of a pear. A V-prong, a claw or a halo over the tip protects it, and an oval has no tip to protect.

Is an oval engagement ring cheaper than a pear?

We cannot say from the shape alone. Carat, colour, clarity, cut quality and whether the stone is lab grown or natural set the price, so we quote the exact stone you choose.
