Where to Buy an Engagement Ring in Dubai: 3 Routes

Where to buy an engagement ring in Dubai: the Gold Souk, a mall boutique or made to order. What each does best and ten checks to make before you pay.

You can buy an engagement ring in Dubai in three ways: in the Gold Souk in Deira, from a boutique in a mall, or from a jeweller who makes the ring to order. The souk is best for comparing many shops in one afternoon, a boutique for trying on finished rings, and made to order for the exact shape, carat and size. On every route, make the same ten checks before you pay.

At a glance

  • The Gold Souk offers many shops to compare, a boutique finished rings to try on, and a made-to-order jeweller your own shape, carat and size.
  • Dubai is not tax-free for jewellery: UAE VAT is 5%, so ask whether any quote includes it.
  • On every route the diamond needs a report you can verify, and the invoice should say lab grown or natural.
  • Settle resizing and returns before you pay: a ring made for one finger is often final sale.

Route 1: the Gold Souk in Deira

The souk's strength is comparison: many independent shops close together, so you can collect several quotes for similar rings in one afternoon. Gold there is sold by weight, at the day's rate for the karat plus a making charge per gram. A diamond ring has a second price inside it, for the stone, which follows its grades and not the gold rate. Ask for the two on separate lines: gold weight, rate and making charge, then the diamond's carat, grades, origin and report.

Bargaining works on the making charge, not on the rate or the scale; our Dubai Gold Souk guide has the five checks. The souk is weakest on terms, since each shop sets its own: get the report, resizing and returns written on the invoice.

Route 2: a boutique in a mall

A boutique suits a buyer who wants to sit down, try several finished rings and return with a sister or a parent, without bargaining. Two questions matter most. What does the tag price include: VAT, the diamond's report, resizing? And is the ring in the case the one you will receive, or a display piece that will be sized or ordered for you, and by when?

Trying an oval, a pear and a round in one setting also shows size on the hand better than any chart, even if you then buy elsewhere.

Route 3: made to order

A made-to-order jeweller starts from your choices instead of a case: shape, carat, setting, gold colour, lab grown or natural, and ring size. The risk is paying for a ring that does not exist yet, so look for a drawing or 3D preview that you approve before anything is cast.

Ours works like this. The ring designer shows your design at true scale on a hand and writes it out with a code; send it on WhatsApp and we reply with the price during opening hours. Each diamond ring page shows five angles in 18K white, yellow and rose gold, and 35 of the 48 rings have a camera try-on that places a close match on your finger: a preview from our designer, not a photograph of your ring. See designing your own engagement ring for the steps.

The terms follow from a ring made for one finger. At Mazimo it is final sale (see our returns policy), and the terms of sale take a 50% deposit, not refundable once casting has begun. The first resizing is free, though diamonds around the band limit it. Manufacturing defects are repaired free for life under our warranty; wear and accidental damage are not covered. Wherever you buy, get the ready date in writing.

Ten checks before you pay, on any route

  1. The report. Ask for the lab, report number, carat to two decimals and millimetres, then enter the number on the lab's own website. GIA's tips for buying a diamond online include its Report Check and the laser inscription; our guide to IGI and GIA reports reads one line by line.
  2. The inscription. A report number can be laser-inscribed on the girdle, readable under 10x magnification. Check every digit, and match the weight and millimetres to the online report too, because an inscription can be copied.
  3. Origin. Only a laboratory can tell lab grown from natural, so the invoice should say which, beside the stone. See lab grown and natural diamonds.
  4. The gold. Find the karat stamp on the ring itself, not only the tag: 750 means 18K, 75% pure gold. For a ring with stones, ask for gold weight and stone weight separately.
  5. The price. Dubai is often called tax-free for jewellery; it is not. UAE VAT is 5%. Ask whether the figure includes it, and compare quotes for the same shape, carat, grades, origin, report and grams, as our engagement ring cost guide shows.
  6. The invoice. UAE consumer law requires a dated invoice naming the seller and its address and describing the goods, with price and quantity (UAE Government portal). Ask for more: lab and report number, grades as the report gives them, karat, grams, and VAT on its own line. Our lab grown diamond pros and cons guide lists what to ask about growth method and any treatment.
  7. Resizing. Who does it, what it costs, how many sizes the ring can move, and whether stones around the band limit it. Settle the size before the ring is made.
  8. Returns and defects. The same law requires a supplier to repair or replace a defective product free of charge. For anything else, ask the shop for its return terms in writing.
  9. Aftercare. What is covered, who checks the claws and how often, and what re-plating costs on white gold. Ask your insurer which document it wants; Mazimo lists written valuations for insurance among its services.
  10. Payment. For cash payments of AED 55,000 or more, a UAE dealer in precious metals and stones must take your Emirates ID or passport and report the sale, UAE Financial Intelligence Unit guidance says. Keep the invoice, report and certificate together.

One check needs no paperwork: see the ring from the side as well as the front. The side shows how high the stone sits, which decides what catches on a sleeve and how a wedding band will sit.

When each route is not the right choice

  • The Gold Souk is wrong if you dislike bargaining or want one adviser from sketch to finger.
  • A mall boutique is wrong if the shape, carat or size you want is not in the case, since changing it means an order anyway.
  • Made to order, ours included, is wrong if you need the ring within days, might change your mind, or want to hold your exact ring first: yours does not exist until it is made.

If you are torn, try rings on in a boutique, ask two or three places to price the same specification, and order from the one whose paperwork is clearest.

Three ready-made designs to try on

If you would rather start from a finished design, these come in 18K white, yellow and rose gold and are made in your size, UAE 46 to 62. The Oval Hidden Halo is the ring in the pictures above. The Marquise Solitaire is the plainest of the three: one 2 ct stone, about 11.70 × 5.98 mm, in six claws on a slim band, so there is a single diamond to check against its report. The Oval and Pear Three Stone has three diamonds, 3 ct together, so ask which of them a report covers and how the other two are described on the invoice. Ask for the price for the metal and diamonds you choose, browse all 48 diamond rings, or book a try-on visit.

Questions people ask

Where is the best place to buy an engagement ring in Dubai?

There is no single best place. Use the Gold Souk to compare many shops, a mall boutique to try finished rings, and a made-to-order jeweller for your own shape, carat and size.

Is it cheaper to buy an engagement ring in the Gold Souk?

Not by default. The souk makes comparison easy and the making charge on gold can be negotiated, but a diamond's price follows its grades and origin wherever you buy. Ask two or three places to price the same specification, VAT included, and compare the totals.

Can I return an engagement ring in Dubai?

It depends on the shop and on whether the ring was made for you. UAE law requires a supplier to repair or replace a defective product free of charge. For anything else, ask the shop for its return terms in writing; made-to-order rings are often final sale.

Do I need ID to buy an engagement ring in Dubai?

For cash payments of AED 55,000 or more, yes: the jeweller must take your Emirates ID or passport and report the sale.
