Pear Shaped Engagement Ring: Ratio, Point and Settings
A pear shaped engagement ring holds a teardrop diamond with one point. Here are GIA's ratio ranges, the bow tie, which way to wear it and how to protect the tip.

A pear shaped engagement ring carries a teardrop diamond with one rounded end and one point, and the point is the part to protect. GIA's pear guides name about 1.50 to 1.75 as the preferred length to width ratio, though a 2025 GIA page says most pears fall between 1.3 and 1.4. The three pear centres in our rings measure about 1.58 to 1.68.
At a glance
- GIA's pear guides name about 1.50 to 1.75 as the preferred length to width ratio; other GIA pages say pears usually fall between 1.3 and 1.8 (2024 study) or 1.3 and 1.4 (2025).
- Eight of our 48 diamond rings use a pear, three as the centre stone, and those three centres measure about 1.58 to 1.68.
- GIA calls the point the most vulnerable part of a pear and suggests a V-prong over it or a bezel around the whole stone.
- GIA calls a point facing away from you the traditional way to wear a pear and leaves the choice to the wearer.

What is a pear shaped engagement ring?
It is a ring whose centre diamond is cut as a teardrop, round at one end and tapering to a point at the other. GIA's pear guide of 13 March 2018 calls it a fancy shape (any outline other than round) and says it blends the round and the marquise.
GIA's 2013 guide says the rounded end should look like a semicircle, and its 2018 guide says the wings, the curved sides running to the point, should be gently rounded, not flat or over-rounded.
Eight of our 48 diamond rings use a pear: the Pear Halo Pavé Ring, the Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring and the Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring have a pear centre, and five more set pears beside an oval or a marquise. Our diamond shapes guide covers all eight shapes.
Pear shape ratio: what GIA says and what our rings measure
Ratio is length divided by width. GIA's pear guides name about 1.50 to 1.75 as the preferred range, and two other GIA pages describe what pears usually measure, with different figures.
- About 1.50 to 1.75. GIA's 2013 guide calls this the preferred range. The 2018 guide says many experts prefer it while others in the trade feel a ratio cannot capture a stone's beauty.
- 1.3 to 1.8. A GIA Gems & Gemology study of Fall 2024 says pears usually fall in this range.
- 1.3 to 1.4. GIA's shape guide of 21 November 2025 says most pears fall here and gives the same figures for ovals. We cannot tell why it differs from GIA's other pear pages.
These are our three pear centres, with ratio as length ÷ width. The last column is width ÷ 16.55 mm, the inside width of a UAE size 52 finger (52 ÷ 3.14159).
| Ring | Shown as | Centre, L × W (mm) | Ratio | Across a size 52 finger |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pear Halo Pavé Ring | Pear · 1.5 ct | 9.01 × 5.72 | 1.58 | 35% |
| Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring | Pear · 2 ct | 11.60 × 6.90 | 1.68 | 42% |
| Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring | Pear · 3 ct | 12.09 × 7.61 | 1.59 | 46% |
All three sit inside the 1.50 to 1.75 and 1.3 to 1.8 ranges and above the 1.3 to 1.4 one. Card carats are rounded up, so the 9.01 mm pear on a 1.5 ct card is shorter than the 9.7 mm pear that our diamond size chart lists for 1.5 ct.
That chart draws its pear at about 1.52 to 1.56 at every weight from 0.5 to 3 ct (6.7 ÷ 4.4 to 12.3 ÷ 7.9).
Pear diamond bow tie: what it is and how to check it
The bow tie is a dark band across the belly of the stone. GIA's 2018 guide says it should be minimal in a well-cut pear and darkens as the gap between length and width grows or the pavilion angles vary more.
The 2024 GIA study found that elongation tends to produce a bow tie in most facet arrangements. Its observers consistently disliked prominent windowing, where the stone looks see-through, and generally disliked broad, dark or persistent bow ties.
Watch the exact stone tilt on video and see whether the shadow fades as it moves or stays dark. Ask us on WhatsApp what we can show; our ring pictures are renders and cannot show it. Our oval guide explains why a bow tie forms.
Which way to wear a pear shaped ring: point towards or away from you
GIA calls the tip pointing away from you the traditional way, but there is no rule. Its 2018 guide says many in the trade think that makes the finger look more slender, that some brides prefer the point towards them and some a horizontal setting, and it leaves the choice to the wearer. Its wording is ambiguous (it pairs away from you with down), so check which end a seller means. The 2025 guide says the point can face up, down or at an angle.
- Point towards the fingertip. Our reading of GIA's traditional way. Our Pear Halo Pavé Ring and Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring pages say point up and our designer draws the point towards the fingertip; ask us on WhatsApp which way a ring is set.
- Point towards the hand. The point faces the wedding band, so a wedding band that curves to follow the tip is one answer: see our wedding band guide.
- Sideways, east to west. Our three pear centres would span about 54%, 70% and 73% of a size 52 finger's inside width (9.01, 11.60 and 12.09 ÷ 16.55). Our pictures show them lengthways only.
Pear diamond tip protection: V-prong, bezel or halo?
GIA calls the point the most vulnerable part of a pear and suggests a V-prong over it or a bezel around the whole stone. GIA's ring care page names the pear among the shapes with more vulnerable points.
- V-prong. A small V of gold that wraps the tip, as GIA's 2013 guide suggests for a prong setting.
- Bezel. A rim of gold around the edge (see our bezel versus prong guide). GIA's marquise guide says bezels snag less than prong or halo settings.
- Halo. A frame of small diamonds that surrounds the tip, as on our Pear Halo Pavé Ring: see our halo guide. GIA's marquise guide says a halo can add some protection as a buffer around the centre stone, but we found no GIA statement that it protects a pear's point, so treat a halo as added cover.
Inspect the point itself: GIA's 2018 guide says to check for inclusions especially near it, because it is the area most sensitive to damage. GIA's care page says to have prongs checked every six months. Our Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring page says a claw protects the point and our Pear Halo Pavé Ring page says its halo does; the Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring page does not say how its tip is covered, so ask us on WhatsApp which claw or setting protects yours.
Pear shaped diamond settings we make
We make pear rings as a halo, with marquise shoulders, on a bypass band and with pears as side stones.
- Halo. The Pear Halo Pavé Ring has a 9.01 × 5.72 mm pear inside a halo of 21 round diamonds, with 16 more along the band and one under the head: 39 diamonds with the centre.
- Marquise shoulders. The Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring sets an 11.60 × 6.90 mm pear between six marquise diamonds, three along each shoulder.
- Bypass. The Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring claw-sets a 12.09 × 7.61 mm pear on a band whose ends pass each other, with no side stones. See our bypass ring guide.
- Pear side stones. The Oval and Pear Three Stone Ring sets two pears beside a 2 ct oval: see our three stone guide.
In our ring designer, try a pear solitaire in white gold or a pear halo in rose gold, drawn at true size. Our settings guide covers the rest.

Oval and Pear Three Stone RingOval · 2 ctPear, oval or marquise: which shape suits you?
Take the oval if you want no point to protect, the pear for a teardrop with one point, and the marquise for the most length and two points to protect. Sizes are our designer's 1 ct stones.
| Shape | What GIA's pages say about ratio | Points to protect | 1 ct in our designer, L × W (mm) | Across a size 52 finger |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | 1.40 to 1.50 is the most popular range; the shape guide says 1.3 to 1.4 | None | 7.7 × 5.7 | 34% |
| Pear | About 1.50 to 1.75 preferred; 1.3 to 1.8 usual (2024); 1.3 to 1.4 most (2025) | One | 8.5 × 5.5 | 33% |
| Marquise | Marquise stones sent to GIA's lab most commonly fall between 1.6 and 2.2 | Two | 10.5 × 5.2 | 31% |
Share is width ÷ 16.55 mm. The three cover nearly the same width of finger. Our oval vs pear guide compares the first two at the same weight, and our marquise guide covers the longest.
How a pear looks on a size 52 finger next to a round
A pear adds length along the finger more than width across it. IGI says its reports give length, width and depth in millimetres, and that long narrow shapes such as the pear can look bigger than a round of the same weight. In our designer a 2 ct pear, 10.7 × 6.9 mm, is about 2.5 mm longer than a 2 ct round at 8.2 mm (10.7 − 8.2) and 1.3 mm narrower (8.2 − 6.9).
GIA's ring size chart pairs a 16.5 mm inside width with a 51.8 mm circumference, close to our 16.55 mm for a size 52, and says fingers swell in heat, which matters in a Dubai summer. Our gold ring sizing guide shows how to measure.
Colour, cut grade and the report: what to check on a pear
GIA says pears tend to hold more colour than round brilliants, so choose a high colour grade or a fancy colour diamond. Our colour grade guide explains the scale.
As of GIA's page of 3 February 2026, GIA gives an official cut grade only to round brilliants and lists the pear among the shapes with none, so its report has none for a pear today. Trade press reported in June 2026 that GIA plans cut grades for marquise, oval and pear stones in 2027; we found no GIA page that says so, so ask what the report states on the day you buy. GIA's 2013 guide says to read the polish and symmetry instead. IGI announced on 1 September 2022 that it had added a cut grade to its reports for loose fancy shaped diamonds, so an IGI report for a loose pear should carry one: our cut grade guide compares the scales. Our guides to GIA reports and IGI reports show where each item sits.
Our ring pages state no colour, clarity or cut grade for any ring. We can set a lab grown or a natural diamond, so tell us which you prefer, and ask on WhatsApp what your quote says. See our lab grown and natural comparison and eye clean guide.

Questions people ask
Which way should a pear shaped engagement ring point?
GIA calls the tip pointing away from you the traditional way and leaves the choice to the wearer; the point towards you or sideways are other options. Our reading: pick by how it sits beside your wedding band.
What is the ideal length to width ratio for a pear shaped diamond?
About 1.50 to 1.75 is the range GIA's 2013 guide calls preferred and its 2018 guide says many experts prefer. A 2024 GIA study says pears usually fall between 1.3 and 1.8, and a 2025 GIA page says 1.3 to 1.4. Our three pear centres measure about 1.58 to 1.68.
Is a pear shaped engagement ring fragile?
Mainly at the point. GIA says shapes with points, the pear among them, are more vulnerable to chipping, and suggests a V-prong or a bezel for the tip. GIA advises checking prongs every six months.
Does a pear shaped diamond look bigger than a round one?
Along the finger, it can. IGI says long narrow shapes such as the pear can look bigger than a round of the same weight. In our designer a 2 ct pear is about 2.5 mm longer than a 2 ct round and about 1.3 mm narrower.
Does every pear diamond have a bow tie?
Many do, to different degrees. GIA says you may not be able to avoid one altogether and that it should be minimal in a well-cut pear. A render cannot show it, so ask us on WhatsApp what we can show of the exact stone.
What setting suits a pear shaped engagement ring?
One that covers the point. GIA suggests a V-prong over it or a bezel around the stone. Our Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring page says a claw covers its tip and our Pear Halo Pavé Ring page says its halo does, though GIA says only that a halo adds some protection. Ask us on WhatsApp about the Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring.
How much does a pear shaped engagement ring cost in Dubai?
Each ring's page shows its price: browse our pear rings. The cost guide explains what moves it, and a designed ring is priced on WhatsApp.
