Hidden Halo Engagement Ring: What It Is, Pros and Cons
A hidden halo sets small diamonds under the centre stone, so they show from the side, not from above. What it adds, what it does not, and our five rings in mm.

A hidden halo engagement ring sets a ring of small diamonds under the centre stone instead of around it, so from above it reads as a solitaire and the small stones show from the side. It does not widen the face of the ring. We name five of our rings hidden halo, four oval and one round, and, by our reading of each ring's page, each holds 13 to 28 small diamonds in the halo itself.
At a glance
- A hidden halo sits beneath the centre stone, so the face-up size stays the centre's own; GIA says a classic halo can make a centre look larger, and we found no GIA statement that a hidden halo does.
- Our five hidden halo centres are about 6.6 to 9.8 mm wide, which is 40 to 59 percent of a UAE size 52 finger (width divided by 16.55 mm); the halo adds nothing to that width from above.
- A classic halo adds about 2.4 mm or more to the width of our Oval Halo Solitaire Ring, so it suits a bigger look and a hidden halo a quiet one.
- A hidden halo has more small stones to look after than a plain solitaire: our hidden halo rings hold 13 to 42, and GIA says settings with many small details can collect dirt more easily.
- The retailer pages we read disagree on how a hidden halo sits beside a straight wedding band, so ask to see your band beside the ring.
Sources checked 20 October 2026. We read GIA pages on settings, apparent size, anatomy, melee, ring care and costs, and retailer pages only for how the term is used. We found no GIA definition of a hidden halo and did not check IGI for one, and our ring pages give no head height.
What is a hidden halo engagement ring?
A hidden halo setting puts a ring of small diamonds under the centre stone, below its girdle, so it shows in side view and at an angle but not from above. It is a feature of the setting, not a grade. Some retailers call it an under halo, and some separate it from an under rail, where the stones sit in the support bars of the gallery, not in a full circle.
The girdle is the narrow band around a diamond's edge where the setting holds it, and the pavilion is the part below it, as GIA's diamond anatomy page explains. The small stones sit in that space, so the centre covers them from above; our side-on ring pictures show them as a row just under it.
The stones are small. GIA defines melee as diamonds under one fifth of a carat and says they are not graded one by one. The 22 stones in our Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring weigh 0.1 ct together, so the halo adds almost no carat weight.
This is our detailed guide to the hidden halo; classic and double halos are in our halo engagement ring guide.
Hidden halo vs halo: what you see from above and from the side
A classic halo surrounds the centre stone and widens the face of the ring. A hidden halo sits under the stone and leaves the face as it is. GIA's guide to ring settings (page dated 14 August 2026) says a halo can make the centre look larger and may need more maintenance. It does not use the phrase hidden halo.
| Solitaire | Classic halo | Hidden halo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| From above | One stone | The stone inside a frame of small diamonds | One stone; the small diamonds are under it |
| From the side | Claws and band | The frame around the stone | A row of small diamonds just under the stone |
| Width added from above | None | About 2.4 mm or more on our Oval Halo Solitaire Ring | None |
| Small stones in our example | None: Oval Solitaire Ring, 3.5 ct | 26: Oval Halo Solitaire Ring | 22: Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring |
The 2.4 mm is our arithmetic. The Oval Halo Solitaire Ring page lists 26 halo diamonds of about 1.20 mm around a centre of about 10.73 × 7.76 mm. A halo stone sits outside the centre's outline, so each side gains at least that much: 10.73 + 2 × 1.20 is about 13.1 mm long and 7.76 + 2 × 1.20 about 10.2 mm wide, before any metal between the stones.
Which sparkles more? We found no GIA comparison of the two, and how a stone returns light depends on its cut and the light around it, so compare the side-on pictures below. Our settings guide covers the other settings.

Does a hidden halo make the diamond look bigger?
Not from above: the small stones sit under the centre, so the face-up width is the centre's own. Retailer pages that mention a side-view effect describe a small one: one says a hidden halo can make a diamond look slightly bigger, especially from the side, and another that the accent ring adds presence and perceived height to the setting, though no visible size to the centre. None gives a measurement, and we found no GIA statement on it.
GIA's article on making a ring look bigger says a halo can make a centre appear as large as the halo, and suggests a centre of at least half a carat. A hidden halo is not on its list of settings that help.
Take two of our 2.5 ct oval rings and a UAE size 52 finger about 16.55 mm across (52 ÷ 3.14159). The Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring has a centre about 7.25 mm wide: 7.25 ÷ 16.55 is about 44 percent of the finger, with nothing added from above. The Oval Halo Solitaire Ring has a centre about 7.76 mm wide, about 47 percent, and with its halo the outline is at least 10.16 mm wide (7.76 + 2 × 1.20): 10.16 ÷ 16.55 is about 61 percent.
The centres differ by about 0.5 mm, so read this as a guide, not a test. Our guide to which diamond shape looks biggest compares shapes.
Our five hidden halo rings in numbers
Our five hidden halo rings have centres 6.6 to 9.8 mm wide, 40 to 59 percent of a UAE size 52 finger, with 13 to 28 small stones in the halo. We count a ring as hidden halo only when its name says so, as of October 2026. Share of finger is the centre's width divided by 16.55 mm. Sizes and stone counts come from each ring's page; the last column is our subtraction from its total diamond count.
| Ring | Centre (L × W, mm) | Share of finger | Hidden halo stones | Other small stones |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring, 1.5 ct | 9.45 × 6.63 | 40% | 22 of about 1.00 mm | None (23 diamonds in all) |
| Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring | 10.52 × 7.25 | 44% | 22 of about 0.90 mm | None (23 in all) |
| Round Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring | 8.04 × 8.08 | 49% | 13 of about 1.20 mm | None (14 in all) |
| Oval Hidden Halo Shoulders Ring | 11.83 × 8.18 | 49% | 22 accent stones of about 1.00 mm | 12 shoulder stones of about 2.20 mm (35 in all) |
| Oval Pavé Hidden Halo Ring, 5.5 ct | 13.97 × 9.78 | 59% | 28 of about 1.00 mm | 14 band stones of about 1.80 mm (43 in all) |
The shoulders ring's page labels its 22 small stones accent diamonds and places small stones along the shoulders and beneath the centre. Our new rings guide counts 12 on the shoulders and 22 beneath the oval, so we read the 22 accent stones as the hidden halo.
Hidden halo oval and other shapes. Four of our 20 oval rings are hidden halos and the round is the only other shape; ask whether pear, cushion, emerald or marquise can be made. Our oval engagement ring guide measures all 20 ovals. Seven other rings also set small stones beneath or below the centre under other names, among them the Oval Tulip Pavé Solitaire Ring and the Oval Bezel Solitaire Ring; we count a ring as hidden halo only when its name says so.
Four of the five have camera try-on, but the camera view does not draw the hidden halo (our camera try-on guide explains); the shoulders ring has no try-on, so ask what we can show.
Hidden halo ring pros and cons
A hidden halo gives a quiet ring with small stones showing from the side, no extra size from above, and more small stones to keep clean.
- Pro: a solitaire look. From above the centre stays the focus; the halo shows in side view and at an angle.
- Pro: a plain band is possible. Three of the five rings carry no stones on the band, so it has none to disturb at the jeweller's.
- Possible pro: GIA groups it with security features. GIA's cost article advises security features that protect the centre and accent stones, then lists hidden halos with extra prongs, gallery rails and channel or bezel settings as features that may raise costs. It does not say how a hidden halo protects, so we cannot say how much it adds.
- Con: more small stones. Ours hold 13 to 42. Some retailers add that soap and oils can gather under the centre stone.
- Con: possibly a higher head. Some retailers say the extra layer adds height to the basket, the metal frame under the stone, and GIA says a high setting may be more likely to snag on clothes. Our ring pages give no head height: check the side-on pictures.
Cleaning, checking and resizing a hidden halo ring
Clean it like any diamond ring, with extra care under the centre stone. GIA's settings guide says settings with many small details can collect dirt more easily, and that most rings can be cleaned at home with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
- Brush from underneath. Our advice: turn the ring over and brush beneath the centre, where the small stones sit, and wash off sunscreen and hand cream. Our guide to cleaning a diamond ring at home has the steps.
- Leave ultrasonic machines to a jeweller. GIA's care page says ultrasonic and steam cleaners can loosen stones and are not recommended for home use, though GIA's pages are not uniform on ultrasonic cleaners; our cleaning guide sets them out.
- Check the claws. GIA's 2017 article says to press the stone gently: if it moves, the claw is loose. It suggests a prong check every six months, or yearly. Also look along the halo row for a missing stone; that check is ours.
- Resizing. GIA's settings guide says pavé bands, set with many small stones, can be harder to resize because the work may disturb them. Three of our five rings list no stones besides the halo and the centre, so their bands carry none (our reading, not GIA's). The first resizing of a Mazimo ring is complimentary; our guide to resizing a diamond ring explains the limits.
Does a hidden halo sit flush with a wedding band?
It depends on the ring, and retailer pages disagree. Some say the extra layer under the stone adds height and can leave a gap beside a flat band; others say it is more likely to sit flush with a flat band. We found no GIA statement on it.
Our wedding band guide gives the rule: claws, a halo or side stones that reach down to band height push a straight band away, unless the head sits high enough for the band to slide underneath. So in the side-on picture, check whether the metal or the small stones under the centre come down to where the band would sit. Our ring pages give no head height, so ask us on WhatsApp whether we can show the ring beside a band. The third and fourth pictures on each of the five ring pages show the head from the side and the front, as renders.
When a hidden halo is not the right choice
Skip it if you want a bigger face, nothing to clean under the stone, or an exact preview in our designer.
- You want a bigger look. A classic halo adds about 2.4 mm or more on the ring above, and a larger centre adds more.
- You want nothing to clean under the stone. A plain solitaire has one diamond and no small stones, as on the Oval Solitaire Ring, 3.5 ct. Our bezel versus prong guide compares another way to hold the stone.
- You want to preview the exact ring in our designer. It does not draw a hidden halo, so the nearest preview is a solitaire.

Questions people ask
What is a hidden halo on an engagement ring?
It is a ring of small diamonds set under the centre stone instead of around it, sometimes called an under halo. From above the ring looks like a solitaire, and the small stones show in side view. By our reading of the ring pages, ours hold 13 to 28 of them, each about 0.90 to 1.20 mm.
Does a hidden halo make a diamond look bigger?
Not from above, because the small stones sit under the centre and the face-up width stays the centre's own: about 44 percent of a size 52 finger on our 2.5 ct oval. Retailer pages describe at most a small effect from the side, none gives a measurement, and we found no GIA statement on it.
Hidden halo or halo: which is better?
Neither is better for every wearer. Choose a classic halo for a wider face, about 2.4 mm or more on our Oval Halo Solitaire Ring, and a hidden halo for a quiet ring with small stones showing from the side. Both hold small stones that need cleaning and checking.
Are hidden halo rings harder to clean?
Somewhat, in our view. GIA says settings with many small details can collect dirt more easily and may need more frequent cleaning. Use warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and leave ultrasonic machines to a jeweller.
Can a hidden halo ring be resized?
It depends on the band. GIA says pavé bands can be harder to resize because the work may disturb small stones. Three of our five hidden halo rings list no stones besides the halo, and the first resizing of a Mazimo ring is complimentary.
Does a hidden halo sit flush with a wedding band?
Retailer pages disagree: some say the extra layer under the stone can leave a gap beside a flat band, others that it is more likely to sit flush. Our ring pages do not say how a band sits, so ask us on WhatsApp whether we can show the ring beside your band.
Can a hidden halo ring have a lab grown or a natural centre diamond?
Yes: we can set either kind in a Mazimo ring, so tell us which you prefer on WhatsApp; our ring pages do not say which kind a ring carries. GIA says melee, the small halo stones, are not graded one by one. Our lab grown and natural diamonds guide compares the two.
Does a hidden halo cost more than a plain solitaire?
It may: GIA lists hidden halos among features that may raise material and labour costs, and it gives no figure for a hidden halo. Each of our ring pages shows its price, so compare them in the diamond ring shop or read our engagement ring cost guide.
At Mazimo. Our five hidden halo rings are made to order in 18K gold, and four have a camera try-on, which shows the stone without the hidden halo, before you visit Al Manal Center in Deira.
