2 Carat Diamond Ring vs 3 Carat: Real Sizes in mm

A 2 carat diamond ring with a round stone is about 8.2 mm across and a 3 carat round about 9.4 mm, in our designer. See rings in real mm on a size 52 finger.

Three Mazimo diamond rings in white, yellow and rose gold: Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring, Oval Tulip Pavé Solitaire Ring and Marquise Side Stone Ring

A 2 carat diamond ring with a round centre stone shows a stone about 8 mm across (8.2 mm in our designer), and a 3 carat round is only about 1.2 mm wider, because carat measures weight, not size. In every shape of its size chart, the step from 2 to 3 ct adds 0.9 to 1.2 mm of width. This guide measures our own 2 ct and 3 ct rings against a UAE size 52 finger.

At a glance

  • GIA defines a carat as 200 milligrams and says carat measures weight, not size, so one carat figure can mean different millimetres.
  • In our designer's size chart a 3 ct stone is about 13 to 15% longer and wider than a 2 ct stone of the same shape, and about 30 to 32% larger face up.
  • Our 13 rings with a 2 ct centre take about 35 to 49% of the width of a size 52 finger, and our four rings with a 3 ct centre take about 45 to 46%.
  • Our ring cards round the centre carat up to the half carat above, and a "3 carat ring" can mean the total weight of all the diamonds, not the centre stone.

Sources checked 20 October 2026, from GIA pages; IGI's carat weight page (dated 28 July 2023) was read on 24 October 2026. We did not check UAE rules on stating diamond weight.

How big is a 2 carat diamond ring on a finger?

On a UAE size 52 finger, the centre stones of our 2 ct rings cover about 35 to 49% of the finger's width, depending on shape. A round is about 8 mm across, an oval about 9.5 to 10.3 mm long and 6.7 to 7.3 mm wide, and a marquise about 11.4 to 11.7 mm long and 6.0 to 6.7 mm wide.

The share is the stone's width divided by about 16.55 mm, the inside width of a size 52 (52 ÷ 3.14159). Length runs along the finger and is not in the share. The table groups every ring in our range with a 2, 2.5, 3 or 3.5 ct centre on its card, except the Radiant Signet Ring, whose stone is set sideways.

Sizes are the centre sizes in our October 2026 specifications, to two decimals; the details line of a ring page rounds them to one decimal. Shares are our arithmetic, not a measured hand.

What does 2 carat mean on a ring: the centre stone or the total?

On a ring, "2 carat" can mean the centre stone or the total of all the diamonds, and it always means weight, not size. GIA defines a metric carat as 200 milligrams and says carat measures weight, not size. Three things sit between that figure and the hand.

  • Cut depth. GIA notes that a poorly cut diamond may be too deep, with weight hidden below the girdle. So ask for length, width and depth in millimetres as well as weight.
  • Centre or total. The same GIA article defines total carat weight as the combined weight of all the diamonds in a piece of jewellery that holds only diamonds, and says a ring set with many small diamonds that add up to the same total carat weight costs significantly less than a solitaire with one stone of that weight. Of our 13 rings with a 2 ct centre, four show a total of 2 ct, seven of 2.5 ct and two of 3 ct. In all, six rings pair a 2 or 2.5 ct centre with a total of 3 or 3.5 ct, such as the Oval Halo Solitaire Ring. Ask whether a "3 carat ring" is the centre or the total.
  • Rounding. A 2 ct card is a stone above 1.5 ct and up to 2 ct, and a 3 ct card is above 2.5 ct and up to 3 ct. It is a label, not a report weight, so ask us on WhatsApp for the weight of the stone you like.

2 carat vs 3 carat: how much bigger is the step?

A 3 ct stone is about 14.5% longer and wider than a 2 ct stone of the same shape and proportions, and about 31% larger face up. It weighs 1.5 times as much (3 ÷ 2), but a diamond grows in length, width and depth together.

With the same proportions, each dimension scales with the cube root of the weight. The cube root of 1.5 is about 1.1447, so a round of 8.2 mm at 2 ct becomes about 9.39 mm at 3 ct (8.2 × 1.1447), and our designer chart says 9.4 mm. Area scales with the square: about 1.31.

The designer's diamond size chart gives the step in every shape, length first. The differences are our subtraction, and the chart's figures, rounded to 0.1 mm, work out at 13 to 15% longer or wider and 30 to 32% larger face up.

Why finished rings differ from the chart

The chart scales one set of proportions, while our cards are rounded up. Two rings with cards of 2 and 3 ct differ in weight by anywhere from a little over 1.25 times (2.5 ÷ 2) to just under 2 times (3 ÷ 1.5), which is a stone about 8% to 26% wider at the same proportions (the cube roots, 1.077 and 1.26).

Pear and marquise are the only shapes we have at both 2 ct and 3 ct, so one pair of each shows how much the gap varies. The Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring (2 ct) and the Pear Bypass Solitaire Ring (3 ct) differ by 0.49 mm in length and 0.71 mm in width (about 11.60 × 6.90 and 12.09 × 7.61 mm). The Marquise Solitaire Ring (2 ct) and the Marquise Tulip Pavé Solitaire Ring (3 ct) differ by 3.30 mm and 1.52 mm (about 11.70 × 5.98 and 15.00 × 7.50 mm). Other pairs differ less in width: our 2 ct marquise rings are up to 6.68 mm wide, 0.82 mm under the 3 ct ones. Compare millimetres, not cards.

How big is a 3 carat oval diamond in mm?

Our designer draws a 3 ct oval at about 11.1 × 8.2 mm. We have no oval ring with a 3 ct centre on its card, so our own ovals sit either side: the three at 2.5 ct are about 10.5 to 10.7 mm long and 7.1 to 7.8 mm wide, and the four at 3.5 ct are about 11.8 to 12.0 mm long and 8.0 to 8.2 mm wide.

The designer's oval has a length to width ratio of about 1.35 (11.1 ÷ 8.2), while our finished 3.5 ct ovals are slimmer, about 1.45 to 1.50, so read each stone's own measurements. Our oval engagement ring guide lists all 20 of our ovals.

GIA says an oval's elongated shape gives more surface area than a round of the same carat weight. Treating each outline as an ellipse (π ÷ 4 × length × width), the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct covers about 56 mm² against about 51 mm² for the Round Solitaire Ring, 2 ct: about 10% more. Both cards read 2 ct, so the stones need not weigh the same; on our designer's 2 ct sizes the oval is only about 4% larger in area (9.7 × 7.2 mm against 8.2 mm), so read 10% as one pair, not a rule.

The rings below are renders in white gold, from a 2 ct round to a 3.5 ct oval.

Shape, setting and wear at 2 and 3 carats

At the same weight an elongated shape shows more length and a round shows more width. GIA's marquise guide of 12 October 2026 says a marquise's length can make it look larger face up than a round of the same carat weight. Our 2 ct marquise centres are about 11.4 to 11.7 mm long, longer than the 9.4 mm of the designer's 3 ct round, but only 6.0 to 6.7 mm wide, so it reads as a longer stone rather than a wider one. See our guides to marquise rings and which diamond shape looks biggest.

How your finger size changes a 2 carat or 3 carat diamond ring

The same stone looks bigger on a smaller finger. A 2 ct round takes about 49% of a size 52, but about 55% of a size 46 and 41% of a size 62. GIA's ring size chart pairs a 16.5 mm inside diameter with a 51.8 mm circumference, which agrees with our 16.55 mm for a size 52, though it does not use UAE sizes. Our small hands guide gives the method and more 2 ct rings; this table adds a 3 ct marquise.

Our reading, from our designer's chart: the carat that keeps a round at about half the finger's width rises with ring size. A 1.5 ct round (7.4 mm) takes about 51% of a size 46, a 2 ct round (8.2 mm) about 50% of a size 52 and a 3 ct round (9.4 mm) about 48% of a size 62. On a size 52, that 3 ct round would take about 57% (9.4 ÷ 16.55).

GIA says fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat, and that a morning and an afternoon measurement can differ, so measure at more than one time of day: our gold ring sizing guide shows how. The first resizing of a Mazimo ring is complimentary (see whether a diamond ring can be resized).

Our reading: choose the share of the finger you like from the tables, decide between length and width, and ask whether a quoted carat is the centre or the total.

2 carat diamond ring in Dubai: what to ask and how to see one

Ask every jeweller for the same four things, so two quotes can be compared.

  1. The centre stone's weight to two decimals, and whether the figure is the centre or the total.
  2. Its length, width and depth in millimetres, which GIA's 2026 guide to reading a report says its reports list for a fancy shape and IGI says its reports include, since diamonds of the same weight can look different in size.
  3. The laboratory and report number, if there is a report. Our guides to GIA reports and IGI reports show what each lists.
  4. How the setting holds and protects the stone.

We make our diamond rings to order in 18K white, yellow or rose gold, in UAE sizes 46 to 62, hallmarked in Dubai and delivered insured across the UAE at no charge. We can set a natural or a lab grown centre diamond, so tell us which you prefer when you ask for the price on WhatsApp. See our lab grown and natural comparison.

Our ring designer previews a stone up to 3 ct at true size on a UAE size 52 hand and shows no price: try a 2 ct oval solitaire, then a 3 ct oval solitaire. Twelve of our 13 rings with a 2 ct centre and two of the four with a 3 ct centre have a camera try-on, which does not measure your finger (see our camera try-on guide). Questions people ask

How big is a 2 carat diamond ring on a finger?

On a UAE size 52, our 2 ct centres cover about 35 to 49% of the finger's width. A round is about 8 mm across (49%) and an oval about 7 mm wide (43%). Carat is weight, so shape sets the millimetres.

What is the difference between a 2 carat and a 3 carat diamond?

A 3 ct stone weighs 1.5 times a 2 ct one, but at the same proportions it is only about 14.5% longer and wider, and about 31% larger face up. In our designer's chart that is 0.9 to 1.2 mm of extra width.

How big is a 3 carat oval diamond in mm?

Our designer draws one at about 11.1 × 8.2 mm. Our own ovals sit either side: about 10.5 to 10.7 mm long at 2.5 ct and 11.8 to 12.0 mm at 3.5 ct.

Where does a 2.5 carat ring sit between 2 and 3 carat?

In between by weight: a 2.5 ct card is above 2 ct and up to 2.5 ct. On a UAE size 52, our 2.5 ct ovals take about 43 to 47% of the finger's width, against 41 to 44% at 2 ct and 48 to 49% at 3.5 ct. Our 2.5 ct marquise rings take 41 to 44%, against 36 to 40% at 2 ct and 45% at 3 ct.

Is a 3 carat diamond ring too big?

It depends on the shape and the finger, not the carat alone. On a UAE size 52, our 3 ct marquise and pear centres take about 45 to 46% of the finger's width, less than the 48 to 49% of our 2 ct rounds, but the marquise is 15.00 mm long. A 3 ct round (9.4 mm in our designer) would take about 57%.

Does a lab grown 2 carat diamond look smaller than a natural one?

GIA says the two have nearly the same chemical, optical and physical properties, so our reading is that equal weight and proportions face up at about the same size. Cut changes size, so compare millimetres. We can set either kind.

How much does a 2 carat diamond ring cost in Dubai?

This guide gives no prices. A ring's page shows its price where one is listed, so browse our diamond rings or read our engagement ring cost guide; for the others, and for a ring you design, we give the price on WhatsApp.
