Engagement Ring for Small Hands: Stone Sizes in mm

Engagement ring for small hands: finished centre stones in mm, set against UAE ring sizes 46 to 62, plus how to check them on your own hand.

Three Mazimo diamond rings in white, yellow and rose gold: Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring, Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring and Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring

No carat or shape makes an engagement ring for small hands right for everyone, so compare the stone's width in millimetres with the inside width of your ring, the distance across its opening. On a UAE size 52 that is about 16.55 mm. A generic round stone 8.00 mm across, not one of our rings, takes about 48% of it, and our Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct, takes about 43%. Carat is weight, not size.

At a glance

  • To find a stone's share, divide your ring size by 3.14159 for the inside width, then divide the stone's width by that.
  • Our twelve tabled rings take about 30 to 59% of a size 52 inside width, and all 48 rings take about 30 to 71% when the three set sideways are measured across the finger.
  • The same generic 8.00 mm round is about 55% of a size 46 inside width and about 41% of a size 62.
  • These shares are our arithmetic and a guide, not a rule: check a stone on your own hand in our designer, with the camera try-on, or at a viewing in Deira.

Engagement ring for small hands: proportion is a ratio, not a carat

Proportion is the width of the stone compared with the finger under it, both in millimetres, and carat cannot tell you that. GIA says carat measures weight, not size, and defines a metric carat as 200 milligrams.

In a separate article, GIA says greater carat weight does not guarantee a diamond will look bigger. For example, a poorly cut stone may be too deep and have weight hidden below the girdle. So this guide works in millimetres.

How wide is a UAE ring size in mm?

A UAE ring size is the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres, so its inside width is the size divided by 3.14159. For size 52 that is 52 ÷ 3.14159, about 16.55 mm. Size 46 gives about 14.64 mm and size 62 about 19.74 mm; our camera try-on guide prints the full table.

As a cross-check, GIA's ring size chart pairs a 16.5 mm inside diameter with a 51.8 mm circumference, which agrees closely with our figure for a size 52. That chart does not use UAE sizes, and it notes that fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat.

This is the inside width of a plain band, a measuring stick, and it says nothing about finger length or your knuckle. Our gold ring sizing guide explains how to measure at home.

How big do our centre stones look on a size 52 finger?

The twelve rings below take about 30 to 59% of the inside width of a size 52, from the Cushion Halo Pavé Ring to the 5 ct oval. They are a selection of our 48 rings.

Sizes are the centre sizes in our ring specifications on 17 October 2026: we divided them, we did not measure a hand. Ring pages print one decimal, so both rounds show 8 × 8 mm there; the table gives the two-decimal sizes behind them, and both rounds read 48%. The share counts the centre stone only, and each ring has its own setting. The Emerald Faceted, Radiant Signet and Baguette Signet Rings set the centre sideways, so the all-48 range measures their longer side across the finger.

Length runs along the finger. The Slim Marquise Solitaire Ring is about 35% across, but its 12.58 mm length, set beside the same 16.55 mm, is about 76%: a comparison, not a share of your finger.

Why two 2 carat rings can look different sizes

Each shape spreads weight differently, and the card figure is a rounded one, not an exact weight, so the same figure can mean different widths. Among the rings in the table, the five shown as 1.5 ct on our site run from about 4.95 to 6.41 mm wide (30 to 39%). Among the same twelve, the four shown as 2 ct run from about 6.90 to 8.00 mm (42 to 48%).

Our designer scales a 1 ct stone by the cube root of the weight, and our diamond size chart in mm gives every shape. Finished rings differ: the designer's 2.00 ct oval is about 9.7 × 7.2 mm, the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct, about 10.02 × 7.11 mm.

Is a 2 carat engagement ring too big?

Four of the rings in the table are shown as 2 ct on our site, and they take about 42 to 48% of a size 52 inside width. They are the Pear Marquise Shoulders Ring, the Round Pavé Solitaire Ring, the Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring and the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct. Whether that is too big is taste and daily life, not a fixed answer.

The Round Six Claw Solitaire Ring is about 8.00 mm wide, so 8.00 ÷ 16.55 is about 48%. The Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct, is about 7.11 mm wide, so 7.11 ÷ 16.55 is about 43%.

To see a 2 carat stone yourself, open a 2.00 ct round solitaire in our designer. It draws about 8.2 mm across, about 49 to 50% of a size 52 inside width: the designer's proportions.

The large end of the table looks different. The Oval Pavé Hidden Halo Ring, 5.5 ct, is about 9.78 mm wide, so 9.78 ÷ 16.55 is about 59%. Our designer stops at 3.00 ct and cannot preview that stone, but its ring page has a camera try-on.

Engagement rings for large hands: the same sum on a bigger size

The sum is identical for short or small fingers and for large hands: only the size changes. Divide the stone's width by the inside width of your size. The same generic 8.00 mm round is about 55% of a size 46 (8.00 ÷ 14.64) and about 41% of a size 62 (8.00 ÷ 19.74).

To keep the 48% it has on a size 52, an 8.00 mm round becomes about 7.1 mm across on a size 46. On a size 62 it becomes about 9.5 mm. That is a way to compare, not a recommendation. Our diamond shapes guide gives our editorial view of shapes by hand; the figures here neither prove nor disprove it.

Can I see a ring on my hand before I order?

In our designer you choose the setting, the diamond and the gold, and see it at true scale on a hand in four skin tones: fair, medium, tan and deep. It covers 0.30 to 3.00 ct and shows no price.

The hand it draws is a UAE size 52 only. On a slimmer finger the stone will look larger than on screen, and on a broader one smaller. These three previews draw about 39%, 43% and 36% of a size 52 inside width: a 1.50 ct oval solitaire, a 2.00 ct oval with marquise shoulders in yellow gold and a 0.75 ct round pavé. They are the designer's proportions, not finished rings, and our guide to designing your own engagement ring in Dubai explains how it works.

Most of our diamond ring pages offer "Try it on with your camera". Thirteen rings have none, and it does not measure your finger.

For the final check, walk in to Al Manal Center, Deira, on any day, or book a viewing of about 45 minutes with no obligation and try rings on with one of our directors.

When this method is not enough

A share of the inside width is a measuring stick, not a verdict. What these numbers do not say: the effect of a shape, setting height, band width or your knuckle. This guide makes no claim that any shape lengthens or shortens a finger: its numbers give width and length only.

A halo adds width around the centre stone that the table does not count; our halo engagement ring guide explains the effect. Our designer shows face-up size, not height, and our ring pictures are renders.

Made-to-order diamond rings are final sale, so settle proportion and size before we make yours. Only the first resizing is complimentary, and rings with full pavé have limits. Our guide to whether a diamond ring can be resized goes into it.

Questions people ask

What engagement ring suits small hands?

No carat or shape suits every small hand. Our table's centre stones take about 30 to 59% of a size 52 inside width, and all 48 rings take about 30 to 71% when the three set sideways are measured across the finger. Choose the share you like and check it on your hand.

Is a 2 carat engagement ring too big?

There is no carat that is too big for every hand, so check the millimetres. On a size 52, the four rings in our table that are shown as 2 ct take about 42 to 48% of the inside width, and the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct, takes about 43%.

Does an oval diamond make short fingers look longer?

GIA says an oval can make fingers appear longer and more slender. That is its view of ovals only, and we have not measured it. What we can give is size: the Oval Pavé Solitaire Ring, 2 ct, is about 10.02 mm long and 7.11 mm wide.

What engagement ring suits large hands?

Run the same sum on your size. A size 62 has an inside width of about 19.74 mm, so a generic 8.00 mm round takes about 41% of it, against about 48% on a size 52. The 5 ct oval takes about 50% (9.78 ÷ 19.74).

What does a 2 carat diamond look like on a hand?

On a size 52, the four rings in our table that are shown as 2 ct take about 42 to 48% of the inside width. Our designer draws a 2.00 ct round solitaire at true scale, and most ring pages offer a camera try-on. Neither measures your finger, so a viewing at Al Manal Center is the final check.
