Platinum vs White Gold Engagement Ring: How to Choose

Platinum is usually about 95% pure with a bright white finish; 18K white gold is 75% gold, usually rhodium plated. What differs in upkeep, weight, allergy and claws.

Three Mazimo diamond rings in white, yellow and rose gold: Oval Solitaire Ring, 3.5 ct, Round Solitaire Ring, 2 ct and Marquise Solitaire Ring

A platinum vs white gold engagement ring has no outright winner: the two differ in upkeep, weight and nickel content. Platinum is usually about 95% pure and has a bright white finish without plating. 18K white gold is 75% gold with white metals added, and it is usually coated in rhodium, a thin layer that wears. This guide sets out what GIA, the US Federal Trade Commission and the hallmark rules say, and where sources differ.

At a glance

  • Platinum jewellery is most often 950 parts in 1,000 platinum, and the stamp may read Pt950, while 18K white gold is 750 parts gold.
  • GIA says white gold is usually rhodium plated, that the ring may look warm once the plating wears away, and that platinum has a bright white finish without plating, although some makers plate it.
  • On the supplier and trade densities we found, a platinum ring of the same shape is about 1.25 to 1.4 times as heavy as one in 18K white gold.
  • GIA calls platinum hypoallergenic and says people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with nickel.
  • GIA says platinum prongs are less likely to break, but we found no independent scratch or hardness comparison of the two metals, so see both on your own hand before you choose.

Sources checked 20 October 2026. We read GIA, the US Federal Trade Commission, the International Hallmarking Convention, the Birmingham Assay Office, Dubai Municipality, UL, DermNet NZ, a metallurgy article on Ganoksin, a Swatch Group patent and two UK metal suppliers. We could not open the text of UAE law, so we give no UAE platinum standard, and we print no prices.

Platinum vs white gold engagement ring: what each metal is made of

Platinum jewellery is usually about 95% platinum, while 18K white gold is 75% gold mixed with white metals and normally plated.

GIA explains that white gold is a gold alloy blended with nickel or palladium, plus copper and zinc, and that 18K means 750 parts of gold per thousand. Its ring material guide says platinum jewellery is usually around 95% platinum. Jurgen Maerz's metallurgy article on Ganoksin says pure platinum is very soft, so jewellery platinum is alloyed, and lists ruthenium, cobalt, iridium and palladium among the metals used.

GIA's buying guide also lists 18K (750) among typical white gold finenesses. For gold alloys in general, see our comparison of 22K, 21K and 18K gold.

Platinum hallmark 950 and gold 750: how to read the marks

A hallmark number is parts per thousand of the precious metal. 950 on platinum means 95% platinum, and 750 on gold means 75% gold, which is 18K.

  • Pt950. GIA says a platinum stamp can read Pt950, meaning 950 parts of platinum per thousand. The Birmingham Assay Office calls 950 the most common fineness for platinum jewellery, with the other 50 parts made up of other elements.
  • Shared standards. The International Hallmarking Convention says five standards are legal in every one of its contracting states: Pt 950, Au 750, Au 585, Ag 925 and Ag 800.
  • Lower platinum numbers exist. The US FTC's platinum jewellery guidance says an item marked only as platinum should be at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum. An item of 850 parts per thousand may be marked with the number and an abbreviation (the guidance is dated December 2010), and anything under 500 should not be called platinum. So read the number: 850 platinum is not Pt950.

In the UAE, Dubai Municipality lists Federal Law No. 11 of 2015 on trade in precious stones, precious metals and their stamping among its consumer laws, and a UL note says it covers platinum jewellery. The UAE is not among the 22 contracting states on the Convention's members page, and we could not open the law's annexes, so we state no UAE platinum standard. Ask any seller of platinum to point to the number and say who applied the mark. Our guides to verifying gold purity and certified gold jewellery in Dubai cover the gold side.

Platinum vs white gold colour: does white gold turn yellow?

White gold is usually rhodium plated and the plating wears; GIA says the ring may then start to look warm in colour. Platinum has a bright white finish without plating, GIA says, although some makers plate it.

GIA's table says white gold may need replating every few years. Our gold colour guide says many rings worn every day need it every year or two, so go by the tint, not the calendar. Our guide to white gold rhodium plating explains the signs, the steps and the habits that make it last.

Platinum has its own change. GIA says it develops a patina with an antique look, which can be polished away if you prefer a shinier surface. It adds that some makers rhodium plate platinum for extra shine, and those rings need replating too, so ask whether a platinum ring is plated. One UK supplier says its high-palladium white gold needs no plating.

GIA names platinum and white gold together as suitable settings for stones graded D to F and as good candidates for G to J, and warns that yellow gold prongs could add some yellow to a stone graded D to J. We found no source ranking one white metal above the other for colour. Our reading: worn plating on a white gold claw shows a warm tint right beside the stone, where you would notice it. Our guide to colour grades covers the effect of metal colour.

Is platinum better than white gold? Wear, scratches and claws (prongs)

Not outright. GIA says platinum is stronger and less brittle than gold alloy, so its prongs are less likely to break, but it also calls white gold durable and long-wearing, and the hardness figures we found cannot be compared like for like.

  • Claws, or prongs. GIA says platinum prongs are less likely to break, while white gold prongs should be checked periodically and repaired or tightened if needed.
  • Shape over time. GIA says platinum will not lose shape or abrade over decades of wear.
  • Scratches. GIA's 2018 buying guide says white gold is usually rhodium plated for a whiter look, a better shine and to protect against scratching, and its 2025 page calls platinum very wear resistant, adding that some makers plate platinum to increase scratch resistance. We found no independent test comparing how the two metals scratch, so we make no claim.

Vickers hardness (HV) measures resistance to indentation; a higher number resists more. Maerz's table lists platinum 950 alloys from 60 HV (with palladium) to 135 HV (with cobalt) and reports up to 270 HV after cold working. A Swatch Group patent lists two 18K palladium white golds it uses as market references at 114 and 122 HV, and its own new alloys at 147 to 211 HV, all in the annealed state. Alloy, temper and test condition change the figure, and we found none for nickel white gold, so we do not rank the metals on hardness.

Whichever metal you pick, the claws need looking at. GIA suggests a prong check about every six months, or once a year on your anniversary. Our guides to engagement ring settings and bezel and prong settings show how a bezel changes the question, and cleaning a diamond ring at home covers the routine.

Platinum vs 18K white gold weight: how much heavier is platinum?

Platinum is denser, so on the figures below the same ring weighs about 1.25 to 1.4 times as much in platinum as in 18K white gold. GIA says platinum is denser and stronger than gold, and the FTC lists density among the properties buyers may care about.

MetalDensity listedWhere listedPlain band below
18K white gold, nickel type14.8 g/cm³UK supplier0.208 × 14.8 = about 3.1 g
18K white gold, high palladium16.0 g/cm³UK supplier0.208 × 16.0 = about 3.3 g
Platinum, cobalt and copper alloy (952)20.1 g/cm³Maerz, Ganoksin0.208 × 20.1 = about 4.2 g
Platinum 950, cobalt alloy20.8 g/cm³Maerz, Ganoksin0.208 × 20.8 = about 4.3 g

The band is an example, not one of our rings. A UAE size 52 finger is about 16.55 mm across (52 / 3.14159). Take a band 2.0 mm wide and 1.8 mm thick. Its middle diameter is 16.55 + 1.8 = 18.35 mm, its middle circumference is 3.14159 × 18.35 = about 57.7 mm, and its volume is 57.7 × 2.0 × 1.8 = about 208 mm³, or 0.208 cm³. Weight is density times volume, so platinum comes out about 1 g heavier. The ratios behind 1.25 to 1.4 are 20.1 / 16.0 = 1.26 and 20.8 / 14.8 = 1.41.

Treat the densities as examples: each alloy differs, and a real ring also has claws and stones. GIA's table notes that large platinum pieces can be heavy to wear, so try the ring on.

Hypoallergenic: platinum or white gold for sensitive skin?

If you react to nickel, GIA points to platinum, or to white gold alloyed with palladium instead of nickel. Nickel white gold is the kind to avoid.

GIA's 2015 page says people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with it, and calls platinum hypoallergenic. DermNet NZ says white gold is usually alloyed with nickel, that the rhodium plating wears off over months or years, and that palladium white gold costs more than the nickel kind. It adds that pure platinum is generally assumed to be nickel-free.

Two cautions. A platinum ring is an alloy and the other metals differ by maker, so hypoallergenic describes platinum in general. And white gold plating wears off, leaving the alloy against the skin; our plating guide covers a study of nickel release. If you react to a metal, tell any jeweller, and us on WhatsApp, before ordering and ask which alloy will be used.

Resizing and repair: is platinum harder to resize than white gold?

GIA's table, which covers rings without gems, says platinum is expensive to resize and that white gold can be resized up to two sizes with replating. We found no source saying either metal cannot be resized.

Band design matters too: GIA says that in general, rings with pavé and channel settings cannot be resized easily, a point our guide to resizing a diamond ring follows through.

The first resizing of a Mazimo ring is complimentary and our warranty page covers it. Our diamond rings are made to order in UAE sizes 46 to 62, so settle your size before the ring is made.

White gold vs platinum for a diamond ring: side by side

Our reading: platinum trades extra weight for less routine upkeep, and white gold trades periodic replating for a lighter ring. The last column shows what each row rests on.

On price, GIA's pages differ. Its 2018 buying guide says gold is generally more affordable than platinum. Its May 2025 guide says platinum metal currently costs less than gold, but higher labour costs make finished platinum jewellery roughly comparable to white gold, depending on design and karat, and its table lists platinum as high-end. We print no prices in guides. Each ring's page shows its price, and our guide to engagement ring costs in Dubai explains what drives it.

Our reading, not GIA's: choose platinum if you want less routine upkeep, accept more weight, or react to nickel. Choose white gold if you prefer a lighter ring and accept that the plating needs renewing from time to time. Whichever you pick, see it on your own hand first.

Our 18K white, yellow and rose gold rings

Our diamond rings are 18K gold, made to order in white, yellow or rose gold and in UAE sizes 46 to 62. If platinum matters to you, ask us on WhatsApp.

Three of these four solitaires hold the centre stone in claws, the part GIA says to have checked: the Oval Solitaire Ring, 3.5 ct has four, and the Marquise Solitaire Ring and the Round Solitaire Ring, 2 ct have six. The Oval Bezel Solitaire Ring sets its centre in a bezel instead. The bezel ring has no camera try-on; the other three do.

Open the ring designer to switch a ring between white, yellow and rose gold at true size, browse our white gold diamond rings, or book an appointment at Al Manal Center in Deira, minutes from the Gold Souk. Our ring pages say that our white gold is rhodium plated, so the plating upkeep above applies to it.

Questions people ask

Is platinum better than white gold for an engagement ring?

Neither is better outright. GIA says platinum is denser, stronger and less brittle than gold alloy and has a bright white finish without plating (some makers do plate it), while white gold is usually rhodium plated and may need replating every few years. Choose by skin sensitivity first, then upkeep, weight and budget, and see both on your hand.

Does white gold turn yellow, and does platinum change colour?

Not by itself, but white gold is usually rhodium plated, GIA says the plating wears away gradually, and the ring may then look warm in colour. Platinum develops a patina, which GIA says can be polished away. Our plating guide covers the signs of worn plating.

What does 950 on a platinum ring mean?

It means 950 parts per thousand are platinum, or 95%, with the other 50 parts other metals. The Hallmarking Convention lists Pt 950 among five standards legal in all its contracting states. The US FTC says an item of 850 parts per thousand may also be marked with its number, so read it.

Is platinum heavier than 18K white gold?

Yes. On the supplier and trade densities we found, a ring of the same shape is about 1.25 to 1.4 times as heavy in platinum. For a plain size 52 band 2.0 mm wide and 1.8 mm thick, that is about 1 g more.

Is platinum hypoallergenic, and is white gold safe with a nickel allergy?

GIA calls platinum hypoallergenic and says people allergic to nickel should avoid white gold alloyed with nickel. Palladium white gold is the other option. A platinum ring is still an alloy, so tell your jeweller which metals you react to.

Can a platinum ring be resized?

Yes, as far as we found. GIA's table, for rings without gems, lists platinum as expensive to resize and white gold as resizable up to two sizes with replating. We found no source saying either cannot be resized. Ask the goldsmith about your ring.

Is a platinum ring more expensive than white gold?

It depends, and GIA's pages differ: its 2018 guide says gold is generally more affordable, while its May 2025 guide says finished platinum jewellery is roughly comparable to white gold, depending on design and karat. We print no prices; each ring's page shows its own, and our cost guide explains what sets it.
