Gold Chain Length and Thickness Guide: cm, Inches, mm
Gold chain length in cm and inches, thickness in mm and weight in grams: typical sizes for men and women, how to measure, and why grams set the price.

A common gold chain length is 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 in) for a woman and 50 to 55 cm (20 to 22 in) for a man. Typical widths are 1 to 2 mm for a pendant chain and 4 to 6 mm for a man's everyday Cuban. These are common retail sizes, not rules: length sets where the chain sits, width sets how it looks, and the grams that come from both set the price.
| Who and how | Typical length | Typical width |
|---|---|---|
| Woman, with a pendant | 40–45 cm (16–18 in) | 1–2 mm |
| Woman, chain on its own | 45–50 cm (18–20 in) | 2–4 mm |
| Man, everyday | 50–55 cm (20–22 in) | 4–6 mm |
| Man, statement | 55–60 cm (22–24 in) | 8 mm and above |
These are typical ranges, not a standard and not Mazimo's own measurements. This guide is the measurement reference; for neckline and styling advice, see which gold necklace suits your neckline.
Chain length chart: choker to rope, in cm and inches
The names are trade convention and sources move the boundaries. The American Gem Society gives matinee as 20 to 24 in, opera as 30 to 36 in and rope as over 36 in, and describes choker and princess by position only, so those rows show the usual retail figures. Lengths of 25 to 29 in fall between names. Inches convert at 2.54 cm, so 18 in is 45.7 cm; shops round it to 45 cm.
| Name | Inches | cm | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choker | 14–16 | 36–41 | Snug at the base of the neck |
| Princess | 17–19 | 43–48 | At or just below the collarbone |
| Matinee | 20–24 | 51–61 | Between the collarbone and the bust |
| Between | 25–29 | 64–74 | Sold as long matinee or short opera |
| Opera | 30–36 | 76–91 | At or below the bust; long enough to double |
| Rope | 37 and over | 94 and over | At the waist or below; wrapped or knotted |
A chain hangs from both sides of the neck, so each 5 cm (2 in) added lowers the front by roughly half that. A common rule for layering is at least 5 cm between chains, so they do not tangle.
How to find your length
- With string. Hold string round your neck where the front of the chain should rest, mark where it meets and read it off a ruler.
- From a chain you own. Lay it flat and measure end to end. Whether a quoted length counts the clasp varies by seller, so ask before you compare two, and ask us how a particular chain is measured.
- With a pendant. Measure from the top of the bail (the loop) to the bottom of the pendant: that drop hangs below the chain's lowest point.
Gold chain thickness in mm
Thickness means width across the widest link, listed in mm. The usual bands:
| Band | Width | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fine | 1–2 mm | Carries a pendant; layers well |
| Medium | 3–5 mm | Wears on its own; a common first men's chain |
| Bold | 6–9 mm | Visible over a shirt; worn on its own |
| Statement | 10 mm and above | The chain is the piece |
- Match the neck. A 2 mm chain disappears on a broad neck and a 10 mm chain overwhelms a slim one.
- Match the pendant. As a rule of thumb, 1 to 1.5 mm suits a small pendant and 2 mm or more a heavier one; check the bail is wide enough for the chain.
Link types compared: Cuban, curb, rope, box, cable, paperclip
Construction matters more than the name: closed, soldered links outlast open ones in any pattern.
| Link | What it is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Cuban | Rounded, close-set curb links that lie flat | Grams climb fast with width |
| Curb | Twisted links that lie flat; a Cuban is the heavier, closer-set kind | A flipped link shows |
| Rope | Strands twisted into a spiral | Thick rope is often hollow |
| Box | Square links in a row | A crushed link is hard to fix |
| Cable | Equal round or oval links, the classic pendant chain | Fine cable can stretch or kink |
| Paperclip | Long, open oval links | Thin links pull open if snagged |
A Cuban is strong, flexible and lies flat, which is why it is a staple of men's chains. In our gold chains you will find the Heritage Cuban, and how to stack bangles and pair them with a chain shows how to wear one with bangles.
Why weight sets the price
A chain is priced on its weight multiplied by the day's rate for its karat, plus a stated making charge and 5% VAT (the UAE's rate). Grams are the one input you can compare between shops, so ask for them first. The rate is on our 18K gold rate page, and what you actually pay for gold in Dubai shows how the parts add up.
Our Heritage Cuban Link Chain in 18K gold is 26.00 g; its page does not list length or width, so ask us on WhatsApp for both.
For the same design, weight grows in step with length and with roughly the square of the width. Taking the Heritage's 26.00 g as a starting point, the table shows what that rule predicts. It is arithmetic, not chains we list.
| Same design, but | Weight factor | Predicted weight |
|---|---|---|
| 10% longer | × 1.10 | 28.6 g |
| 10% wider | × 1.21 | 31.5 g |
| 10% longer and 10% wider | × 1.33 | 34.6 g |
| 25% wider | × 1.56 | 40.6 g |
Published weights track the length rule exactly and the width rule a little under. Avianne & Co., an online jeweller, lists a solid 18K 5 mm Cuban at 44.3 g at 18 in and 59.0 g at 24 in: a third longer, a third heavier. At 22 in it lists 54.1 g for 5 mm and 187 g for 10 mm, so doubling the width multiplies the weight by about 3.5, not 4. It notes that listed weights can vary by up to 5 g, and hollow links or a different pattern break the rule, so trust the weight on your invoice, not arithmetic.
Solid or hollow, clasp and extender
- Solid or hollow. A hollow chain is a thin shell: it looks wide, weighs far less and dents. A chain surprisingly light for its width is the clue, so ask; we weigh every piece in front of you.
- Clasp. Look for a lobster clasp on a heavy chain; open and close it several times and check the ring it catches on is soldered shut.
- Extender. A few spare links let one chain sit at two lengths. Ask whether it has one.
- Karat stamp and paperwork. Look for the karat stamp (18K or 750) and an invoice stating karat and weight. Every Mazimo piece is stamped with its karat and sold with a certificate of purity.
Karat for chains: 18K, 21K and 22K
18K is 75% gold (stamped 750), 21K is 87.5% (875) and 22K about 91.6% (916); the rest is alloy, which makes pure gold harder and more durable. More gold gives a deeper yellow and a softer metal, and in a chain every link rubs on the next, so a fine 22K chain marks and kinks more easily than 18K of the same width. 21K and 22K give the deeper yellow of traditional UAE jewellery; 18K suits a slimmer chain that keeps its shape.
Chain length for a pendant
On an average neck a pendant sits at the base of the throat on 40 cm (16 in), at the collarbone on 45 cm (18 in), just below it on 50 cm (20 in) and on the upper chest on 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24 in). Our Key to My Heart locket is 18K and 10.160 g for the whole necklace; its page does not list the chain length, so ask us.
Questions people ask
What is a good gold chain length for a man?
A typical starting point is 50 cm (20 in); 55 cm (22 in) suits a broader neck or a heavier chain. See our guide to men's gold jewellery in Dubai.
How thick should a gold chain be?
Typically 1 to 2 mm for a pendant chain, 3 to 5 mm worn alone and 6 mm and above for a bold look.
How many grams is a gold chain?
From a few grams for a fine pendant chain to well over 100 g for a 10 mm solid Cuban, depending on length, width, link and whether it is hollow. Our Heritage Cuban is 26.00 g in 18K.
Can a chain be shortened or lengthened?
It depends on the design, so ask us on WhatsApp before you order: our goldsmiths handle adjustments and confirm what a chain allows. The complimentary first resizing is listed for rings and bangles; other work that is not a warranty repair is quoted before we start.
