How to Stack Bangles and Pair Them with a Chain

Karat colour, link scale and proportion: the three rules for wearing bangles and chains together, with combinations that work for day and evening.

Gold on the wrist and gold at the neck should feel like one decision, not two. The way to get there is three rules: match the colour, respect the scale, and let one piece lead.

Rule 1: match the colour

22K is deep yellow, 21K warm, 18K a little paler; white and rose gold are their own colours. Pieces of the same karat sit together naturally. Mixing karats works when it is deliberate, a tri-tone bangle next to a yellow chain, for example, but a 22K bangle next to an 18K chain can look like two different metals in daylight.

Rule 2: respect the scale

A heavy Cuban chain wants a wrist with weight on it too: a wide bangle or a Cuban bracelet. A fine chain with a small pendant wants slim bangles. Match the link size on the chain to the width of the bangles and the eye reads them as a set.

Rule 3: one piece leads

If the chain is the statement, keep the wrist quiet: two slim bangles. If the wrist is the statement, a stack of three or a wide Greek key, keep the chain simple. Two statements compete.

Stacking bangles

  • Three is the number. One wide, two slim, or three slim in different textures: polished, brushed, pavé.
  • Same diameter. They should move together, not one sliding over the others.
  • Texture, not colour, for contrast. A Greek key, a wave with pavé lines and a plain polished bangle in the same 18K read as one set.

Our 18K Italian bangles are made in the same diameter for exactly this reason.

Choosing the chain

A Cuban link is the everyday chain: flat, dense, comfortable under a collar. Length decides everything: 45 cm sits at the collarbone, 50 cm just below, 55 to 60 cm on the chest. For a pendant, a rolo chain lets it hang straight. See the chains and the Key to My Heart locket.

Day and evening

Day: one slim bangle, or a bracelet, and a fine chain. Evening: the stack of three and the heavier chain, or a single statement bangle with nothing at the neck. Rings follow the same rule: a signet on one hand, not both.
