Which hand does an engagement ring go on? [GIA](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-wear-engagement-ring-wedding-band/) gives the fourth finger of the left hand as the traditional answer, but says there is no right or wrong way. Some Arab press, including a 2011 column in The National about Arabs in general, describes the right hand during the engagement and a move to the left at the wedding, though we found no survey. Pick the hand that means something to you, and size that finger.

At a glance

- GIA says the tradition is the fourth finger of the left hand, that wedding rings on the right hand are common in countries such as Russia, Germany, Poland, Greece and India, and that the right place is the one that means most to you and is practical to wear.
- A 2011 column in The National (it speaks of Arabs in general and never names the UAE) and a 2017 Egyptian paper, Sawt Al-Umma, describe couples' bands worn on the right hand until the wedding and then moved to the left, but we found no survey or official source for Emirati families.
- The left hand has not always been the English answer: the V&A says the bride's ring was normally placed on the right hand at the beginning of the 16th century, and the 1549 prayer book specified the left, and the 1549 prayer book specified the left.
- GIA says that for a right-handed person the left ring finger is typically about half a size smaller than the right, so size the finger that will wear the ring first.
- Mazimo rings are made to order in UAE sizes 46 to 62, and the first resizing of a Mazimo ring is complimentary, only the first, so tell us if your ring will change hands.

Sources checked 20 October 2026. We found no academic, government or survey source on how common the right-then-left pattern is in the Gulf, so that part rests on newspapers, a magazine and a general reference site, so that part rests on newspapers, a magazine and a general reference site. We re-read these pages on 24 October 2026. We describe customs, give no religious rulings and read no Islamic religious sources.

## Which hand does an engagement ring go on?

GIA says there is no right or wrong way, and the pages we read show the tradition changing with country and church. [GIA's guide to wearing engagement rings and wedding bands](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-wear-engagement-ring-wedding-band/), dated 2 October 2025, says the tradition is the fourth finger of the left hand, the ring finger. Its section on which finger concludes that the right place is the one that means most to you and is practical to wear.

The table lists what the pages we read describe, not a ranking.

## What do Arab sources say about an engagement ring on the right hand?

The Arab sources we read describe the right hand for the engagement band, and three of the four add a move to the left hand at the wedding. They are newspapers, a magazine and a reference site, not surveys, and not four independent witnesses: Sayidaty gives almost the same wording as Sawt Al-Umma, and Mawdoo3 lists English-language pages as its references.

- **[The National](https://www.thenationalnews.com/lifestyle/family/constant-reminder-on-hand-1.421201) (a UAE newspaper), 28 February 2011.** Hala Khalaf, writing in the first person, describes an Arab custom: couples buy bands for their right ring fingers at the engagement and help each other move them to the left at the wedding, in front of guests. The column never mentions the UAE and describes a matching pair of bands (one with a protruding diamond), not a separate solitaire engagement ring.
- **[Sawt Al-Umma](https://www.soutalomma.com/Article/685355/%D8%AD%D9%83%D8%A7%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%B1%D8%AD%D9%84%D8%A9-%D8%AF%D8%A8%D9%84%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B3%D9%8A%D9%86-%D9%85%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%86%D9%89-%D8%A5%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%89) (Egypt), 13 October 2017.** The newspaper says Egyptians have long worn the dibla, the band both partners wear, on the right hand during the engagement and moved it to the left on the wedding day.
- **[Mawdoo3](https://mawdoo3.com/%D8%A3%D9%8A%D9%86_%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%B6%D8%B9_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D8%A8%D9%84%D8%A9_%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%AF_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B2%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AC), updated 20 October 2021.** This Arabic reference site says the ring is worn on the right ring finger during the engagement and on the left after the wedding. It names no country.
- **[Sayidaty](https://sayidaty.net/node/1365076), 5 March 2022.** This Arabic women's magazine says the ring goes on the right hand during the engagement; for the bride it is usually a diamond or gemstone ring, al-mahbas, worn over the dibla band. It does not say what happens after the wedding.

Sawt Al-Umma (2017) and Sayidaty (2022) give the same reason for the right hand in almost the same words, so we count them as one account: it is the hand used to swear an oath, and an engagement is a pledge. Our reading: an explanation people give, with no historical source that we found.

Most of these pages are about the dibla, the band both partners wear. Only Sayidaty names a separate diamond or gemstone ring, and it does not say where that ring goes after the wedding.

## What we could not find for the UAE

The only page we read that names the UAE and a hand is an unsigned, undated wedding-portal article, [Arabia Weddings](https://www.arabiaweddings.com/articles/what-should-i-do-with-my-engagement-ring-on-the-day-of-my-wedding), which we do not rely on. No source with an author, a date or a method says which hand Emirati families use, or how many follow the right-then-left pattern. [The National's 2022 guide to Emirati weddings](https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/2022/11/11/emirati-wedding-traditions/) says the couple usually exchange rings at a small ceremony called a milcha, when the marriage contract is signed, but it names no hand.

So Arab press describes the right-then-left pattern in a few places, and we cannot say it is the rule for your family. Ask yours before you order. What religion says about rings is a question for a scholar you trust.

## Why is the left hand the traditional answer?

The left-hand custom is usually traced to an ancient belief about the heart, not to anatomy, and the English prayer book specified the left hand from 1549.

The Roman writer Aulus Gellius says in [Attic Nights, book 10, chapter 10](https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Gellius/10*.html) that he had heard the ancient Greeks wore a ring on the left-hand finger next to the little finger, and that Roman men commonly did too. Apion's Egyptian History, he says, reports that Egyptian dissection found a very fine nerve running from that finger to the heart. GIA says the related belief in a vein of love from that finger, the vena amoris, has been scientifically disproven.

The hand was not fixed for centuries either. The V&A's [record of a 15th century Italian fede ring](https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O121141/fede-ring-unknown/), a ring showing two clasped hands, says Isidore of Seville (died 636) wrote that a ring goes on the fourth finger of the bride's right hand, because the vein in that arm flowed straight to the heart. Its [record of an English gold wedding ring](https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O77764/ring-unknown/) says the normal practice in the early 1500s was the bride's right hand, the 1549 Book of Common Prayer specified the left, probably because a misreading of Gellius had been corrected.

The 1662 prayer book in the table above kept the left hand. We found no source that dates the Arab right-hand custom.

## Do you switch hands at the wedding?

Some couples do and some do not, and Some couples do and some do not, and the pages we read describe each pattern as a custom, a habit or an option, not a rule. The right-then-left pattern in the Arab press, described above, moves the bands at the wedding.

[Emily Post](https://emilypost.com/advice/ring-regulation-in-what-order-should-you-wear-your-rings), an American etiquette guide, uses the right hand only briefly: it has the bride move her engagement ring to her right hand just before the ceremony, so the wedding band goes on her left hand first. Afterwards the ring returns to the left hand, on top of the band. An unsigned Q&A about wedding bands on the [Orthodox Church in America](https://www.oca.org/questions/sacramentmarriage/wedding-bands) website says there is no custom in the Orthodox Church of switching hands after the honeymoon. [GIA](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-wear-engagement-ring-wedding-band/) adds a modern option with no move at all: the engagement ring on the right hand and the wedding band on the left.

| Plan | Size which finger | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Right hand now, left after the wedding | The right ring finger for the proposal, then check the left | The left finger may be smaller (next section), and it will share the finger with a band: see our [wedding band guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/wedding-band-guide-uae) |
| Left hand from the start | The left ring finger | One finger, so usually one size; our wedding band guide says a wide band sits tighter, so ask us what size to choose |
| Right hand for good, band on the left | The right ring finger for the ring, the left for the band | Two fingers, so two sizes; our reading is that the rings then no longer rub together |

## Is the ring finger on your right hand bigger than your left?

Typically a little, if you are right-handed. [GIA's ring size guide](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-determine-ring-size-tips-and-ring-size-chart/), dated 18 January 2018, says that for a right-handed person the left ring finger is typically smaller than the right by about half a size, and vice versa.

GIA gives no millimetre figure for that gap, but its chart shows a half size. US 5.5 has an inside circumference of 50.6 mm, US 6 has 51.8 mm and US 6.5 has 53.1 mm, so a half size is about 1.2 to 1.3 mm of circumference (51.8 minus 50.6 is 1.2; 53.1 minus 51.8 is 1.3).

On the UAE scale we use, a size is the inner circumference in millimetres, so size 52 is 52 / 3.14159, about 16.55 mm across, and GIA's half size is a little more than one UAE size. If a right ring finger is a 52, GIA's typical left finger is near 51 (52 minus 1.2 to 1.3 is 50.7 to 50.8). That illustrates GIA's typical case, not your finger.

Heat matters too. GIA says fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat. Dubai moves between outdoor heat and air conditioning, so our reading is to measure more than once, on both hands. GIA also notes it is easier to remove metal from a too-big ring than to add it to a too-small one, so our reading is that moving to the smaller finger is the easier direction. Our [gold ring sizing guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/gold-ring-sizing-guide-uae) and [ring size guide](https://mazimo.ae/guides/ring-size) explain how to measure at home; measure the finger that will wear the ring.

## Which rings are easier to move from one hand to the other?

Our reading: a ring with a plain band is the easier case, because no small stones in the band are disturbed if the size changes. [GIA's guide to ring settings](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/guide-to-ring-settings/), dated 14 August 2026, says pavé-set bands can be more difficult to resize, since adjusting the ring may disturb the small stones. Our [guide to resizing a diamond ring](https://mazimo.ae/journal/can-a-diamond-ring-be-resized) goes through each band type.

On 20 October 2026, 16 of our 48 diamond ring pages list a plain band in the setting line: 12 claw-set rings and 4 bezel rings. Our reading: a ring on your dominant hand meets more doors, bags and counters. GIA says a bezel's smooth edges are less likely to catch on clothing or gloves, so a [bezel ring](https://mazimo.ae/shop/diamond-rings?style=bezel) is one answer, and our [bezel and prong guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/bezel-vs-prong-setting-engagement-ring) compares the two. Below are four plain-band solitaires in white gold.

## Designing a ring for the hand you choose

Choose the size for the hand that wears the ring first. Our [ring designer](https://mazimo.ae/design) previews a ring at true size and takes a UAE size from 46 to 62, which is 46 to 62 mm of inner circumference. If you do not know your size yet, choose Not sure yet and give us the size before the ring is finished, as our guide to [choosing an engagement ring in Dubai](https://mazimo.ae/journal/how-to-choose-an-engagement-ring-dubai) explains.

To find the size, [GIA says](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-determine-ring-size-tips-and-ring-size-chart/) to measure a ring she already wears on her ring finger and to tell the jeweller which hand it is usually worn on and which is dominant. Then [try the ring on with your camera](https://mazimo.ae/journal/try-diamond-ring-on-with-camera-ring-size), which shows the look, not your size. Our guide to [designing your own engagement ring](https://mazimo.ae/journal/design-your-own-engagement-ring-dubai) covers the rest, or [book a private viewing](https://mazimo.ae/appointment) at Al Manal Center.

## Questions people ask

### Which hand does an engagement ring go on?

GIA gives the fourth finger of the left hand as the tradition and says there is no right or wrong way. The Arab sources we read describe the right hand during the engagement. Choose the hand that means something to you and suits your day, and size that finger.

### Which hand is the engagement ring worn on in the UAE?

We found no survey or official source for Emirati families, so ask yours. One unsigned, undated wedding portal, Arabia Weddings, says the right hand until the wedding; the other Arab sources we read do not name the UAE. We make rings to order in UAE sizes 46 to 62 for either hand.

### Which hand do Muslims wear an engagement ring on?

We cannot answer that as a religious question: we give no ruling and read no Islamic religious sources. The Arabic pages we read, Sawt Al-Umma, Sayidaty and Mawdoo3, describe a custom, and none cites a religious text for the hand. For a religious question, ask a scholar you trust.

### Can I wear my engagement ring on my right hand?

Yes. GIA says no way is wrong and that what matters is what feels right for you and your partner, and it suggests the engagement ring on the right hand and the wedding band on the left as one modern option. Our reading: a right-handed wearer's right hand meets more knocks.

### Which finger does an engagement ring go on?

The ring finger, the fourth finger. GIA gives the left one as the tradition, and the Arab sources we read describe the right ring finger. GIA calls the old belief in a vein from that finger to the heart scientifically disproven.

### Do you move the engagement ring to the left hand after the wedding?

That is a choice, not a requirement. The right-then-left pattern in The National (for Arabs in general) and Sawt Al-Umma (for Egyptians) moves the bands at the wedding. The right-then-left pattern in The National (for Arabs in general) and Sawt Al-Umma (for Egyptians) moves the bands at the wedding. If the ring will move, tell us and size it for the finger that wears it first.

### Is my right ring finger bigger than my left?

For a right-handed person, typically yes, by about half a size. GIA says the left ring finger is typically smaller than the right by about that much, and vice versa. Measure both if you can, and tell the jeweller which hand is dominant.
