In the Gulf, gold jewellery has always been savings you can wear. That is still true, with one honest condition: only the gold is the investment. The design, the labour and the tax are the price of enjoying it. Buy with that in mind and jewellery holds its value remarkably well; ignore it and you will be disappointed at resale.

## What you get back

When you sell or exchange gold in Dubai, you are paid for the metal: the weight, tested and multiplied by the day's rate for the karat. Mazimo, like most jewellers, buys back at the prevailing rate for any karat and from any jeweller. What you do not get back is the making charge or the VAT. So the share of the price that was gold is the share that is an investment.

## The three rules

1. **High karat.** 22K and 21K carry more gold per gram than 18K, so more of the price is metal. For pure savings, 22K.
2. **Low making charge.** Plain bangles, chains and coins have the lowest labour share; intricate work has the highest. Ask for the charge separately and keep it small on investment pieces.
3. **Certified and documented.** A certificate with weight and karat, and a tracking code that proves it, is what makes the piece easy to sell later at full metal value. See [buying certified gold](https://mazimo.ae/journal/buy-certified-gold-jewellery-dubai).

## Which pieces hold value best

- **Plain 22K bangles:** the classic. Heavy, simple, low labour.
- **21K chains and bangles:** almost as good and wearable daily.
- **Coins and bars:** pure gold value, but not jewellery.

## Which pieces to buy for wearing, not value

Fine 18K work with pavé, Italian designs, white gold, anything with stones. These are worth every dirham as jewellery, and the gold in them is still real value, but the making charge is a larger share. Buy them because you love them, and keep the certificate.

## Gold versus craftsmanship: the honest trade

A 10-gram plain 22K bangle and a 10-gram sculpted 18K bracelet can cost about the same. The first is mostly gold; the second is more than a third labour. In twenty years the first has kept nearly all its value in metal; the second has kept its metal and given you a piece you actually wore. Neither is wrong. Know which one you are buying.

## Spreading purchases

The gold rate moves. If you are buying to save, buy in two or three parts over several months rather than at once; it smooths the rate you pay and takes the pressure off timing. Our guides to [what moves the rate](https://mazimo.ae/journal/dubai-gold-rate-factors) and [timing](https://mazimo.ae/journal/best-time-to-buy-gold-dubai) explain why.

## Keeping the record

Photograph the invoice, keep the tracking code in your phone, store the piece in its pouch. When you sell, all three come with you.

**At Mazimo.** Every piece is weighed in front of you at Al Manal Center, Deira, priced on the [live gold rate](https://mazimo.ae/gold-rates) of the day, and leaves with a certificate of purity and a tracking code you can check any time at [mazimo.ae/track](https://mazimo.ae/track). Delivery across the UAE is insured and complimentary; unworn pieces can be exchanged within 48 hours of delivery.
