# How a Custom Diamond Ring Is Made: CAD to Finger

A custom diamond ring is made in roughly seven stages: a brief, a CAD model, a preview you approve, casting in 18K gold, hand setting of the diamonds, finishing with hallmark and engraving, then delivery or collection. The ring exists on a screen long before it exists in gold, and that is where changes belong: once casting has begun, Mazimo's terms make the deposit non-refundable.

## Stage by stage: from brief to finger

The stages run roughly in this order.

### 1. The brief

You begin with a reference: a ring you saw, a sketch, a family heirloom, or a design built in our [ring designer](https://mazimo.ae/design), which writes your choices out in full and places no order when you send it to us on WhatsApp. An idea the designer cannot draw is [bespoke design](https://mazimo.ae/services#bespoke): bring the reference to a consultation and we design it with you, and our guide to [designing your own engagement ring in Dubai](https://mazimo.ae/journal/design-your-own-engagement-ring-dubai) covers both routes.

### 2. The CAD model

A CAD designer builds the ring as a 3D model on a computer, so the band, every claw and each stone have an exact position before any gold is used. Goldsmiths work from a CAD sheet: several views of the model, usually with a list of the stones in it. It is a working drawing, not a photograph, and what we show you before casting is the preview described below.

Take the Oval Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring. Its page lists one oval of about 10.52 × 7.25 mm (2.5 ct) and 22 round diamonds of 0.90 mm (0.1 ct together): 2.5 ct across 23 stones, under design code IP-1672, which you can quote to us. That stone list is what the model is built around, so hold your quote and the centre stone's grading report against it: the measurements should agree closely, and a large gap deserves an explanation.

### 3. The preview you approve

Before anything is cast, you look at the design and confirm it. In the designer the preview is drawn at true scale on a hand; for bespoke work we share a 3D preview first, as our services page says. Each ready ring's page shows the ring rendered in white, yellow and rose gold from five angles, and its camera try-on draws a close match on your own hand, not a photograph of the exact ring.

GIA describes the same step across the trade: computer-generated images let a client see what a finished piece will look like before it is made ([GIA on technology in jewelry design](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/technology-changing-jewelry-design/)). Study the side view as closely as the top one: a face-up picture hides how high the stone sits.

### 4. Pattern and casting in 18K gold

Once you have approved, the model goes to the workshop. GIA notes that 3D printers make resin prototypes of the CAD model that can be cast ([GIA](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/technology-changing-jewelry-design/)). In lost-wax casting the pattern is encased in plaster, heated until it burns away, and molten gold is poured into the cavity. Our bespoke work is cast in partner workshops in Dubai and Italy. Diamond rings are 18K: 75% pure gold, stamped 750, with the alloy deciding whether the ring is white, yellow or rose.

Casting is the point of no return: under our [terms of sale](https://mazimo.ae/terms) the deposit is non-refundable once it has begun. If you react to nickel, say so before the ring is made, because we do not publish which white alloy each ring is cast in.

### 5. Setting the diamonds

The cast ring is bare gold, and the diamonds go in afterwards: each is set by hand in Dubai, with the claws or beads of gold closed over it. The centre diamond comes with a grading report where applicable, and its laser inscription matches the report. ### 6. Finishing, hallmark and engraving

The ring is polished, and the gold is stamped 750 and hallmarked in Dubai. For context, gold and jewellery shops in Dubai are inspected by Dubai Municipality's Central Laboratory ([Dubai Central Laboratory](https://www.dm.gov.ae/municipality-business/about-laboratory/)).

Engraving is done by hand at the boutique, with an initial, a date or a short line, and we show you the layout before any mark is made. Every ring leaves with a certificate of purity and a tracking code that opens at mazimo.ae/track.

### 7. Delivery or collection

Collect the ring at Al Manal Center in Deira, or have it delivered insured anywhere in the UAE at no charge. The first resizing is complimentary, and the [lifetime warranty](https://mazimo.ae/warranty) repairs manufacturing defects in settings and soldering; wear and accidents are excluded. We publish no fixed turnaround for made-to-order rings, so ask for the date with your price and get it in writing before you pay the deposit.

## Five checks before you approve

Settle them first, because stones along the band limit resizing: the Oval Halo Pavé Ring has 18 round diamonds on its band. Then check:

1. **The centre stone.** Shape, millimetres and carat in your quote and the preview match the ring's page, lab grown or natural is written down, and the grading report agrees when it arrives.
2. **The gold.** Colour and 18K, in writing. Ask how the live gold rate and the diamonds make up your price: our terms say the invoice states weight, karat and making charge.
3. **The claws.** How many there are, and how the points of a pear or marquise are held.
4. **The profile.** How high the stone sits, and whether a straight band will lie beside it (see our [wedding band guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/wedding-band-guide-uae)).
5. **The paperwork.** The price, the deposit, the date and the grading report, where there is one, all in writing.

## When a custom ring is not the right choice

Skip it if you need the ring by a fixed date you cannot get in writing, or want to be able to return a ring you may not love.
