An emerald cut engagement ring holds a rectangular diamond with cropped corners and long, parallel step facets. It gives a mirror-like gleam rather than sparkle, and GIA says inclusions and colour tend to be easier to spot in it than in other shapes. GIA recommends VS2 clarity and G colour or above for it, and gives the shape no overall cut grade. Our three emerald cut rings have centres with a length to width ratio of about 1.42 to 1.49.

At a glance

- GIA calls the emerald cut a step cut whose long, open facets put clarity and luster ahead of brilliance.
- GIA recommends VS2 clarity and G colour or above, and higher grades for stones of 2 to 3 carats or more; our own rule of thumb is VS1 or better.
- GIA gives an overall cut grade only to standard round brilliants, so a GIA natural diamond report for an emerald cut shows polish, symmetry and measurements.
- Our three emerald cut rings have centres of about 7.89 × 5.57, 8.76 × 5.87 and 7.78 × 5.46 mm, ratios of about 1.42, 1.49 and 1.42.
- The 2 ct Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring covers at most about 1 percent more area than the 2 ct Round Solitaire Ring: longer and slimmer, not larger.

## What is an emerald cut engagement ring?

An emerald cut engagement ring carries a rectangular diamond with cropped corners and a wide, flat top called the table. [GIA's shape guide (21 November 2025)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/guide-diamond-shapes-engagement-rings/) says the name refers to how the stone is cut, not to the gem, and that the style was first devised for emeralds to ease the pressure of cutting and avoid chips.

The guide adds that the cut suits minimalist, Art Deco and vintage-inspired styles, and that its long outline flatters the hand and makes fingers look slimmer. Our [diamond shapes guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-shapes-guide) compares it with the other shapes, and you can [filter our diamond rings to emerald cut](https://mazimo.ae/shop/diamond-rings?shape=emerald).

### Step cut vs brilliant cut: why it gleams instead of sparkling

A step cut has fewer, larger facets that flash like mirrors; a brilliant cut has many small ones that break light into sparkle. GIA describes a step cut as concentric trapezoid facets, larger ones that show colour and clarity more, and a brilliant cut as many small kite and triangle facets whose busier pattern can help mask inclusions and colour.

The radiant cut is a rectangle with trimmed corners and brilliant-style facets: GIA says its 70 facets make it a more forgiving choice than a step cut such as the emerald. See our [radiant cut vs cushion cut guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/radiant-cut-vs-cushion-cut-engagement-ring), or [filter our rings to radiant](https://mazimo.ae/shop/diamond-rings?shape=radiant).

## Emerald cut clarity: is VS1 or VS2 enough?

GIA recommends VS2 clarity and G colour or above for an emerald cut, with higher grades for stones of 2 to 3 carats or more. Our rule of thumb is a step stricter on clarity: VS1 or better, which is our advice, not a GIA rule.

GIA's shape guide gives the reason as the large table and open facets. [GIA's clarity article (17 April 2018)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/seven-things-to-know-about-diamond-clarity/) says characteristics are typically easier to see in an emerald cut than in a round brilliant, and that an inclusion near the centre of the table has a greater effect on the grade. [Its buying guide (7 July 2020)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-buy-a-quality-diamond/) says inclusions stand out far more in step cuts, and suggests a brilliant cut if you would accept a lower clarity grade.

| Question | GIA, shape guide of 21 November 2025 | Our rule of thumb |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Clarity | VS2 or above | VS1 or better ([4Cs guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-4cs-guide)) |
| Colour | G or above | G or H in white gold; H to J in yellow or rose gold ([colour guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-colour-grade-and-fluorescence)). Looser than GIA's G because warm metal can hide a little colour: our advice, not GIA's, so judge the stone in your metal |
| Stones of 2 to 3 carats or more | Higher grades, no figure given | Ask to see the plot and the stone |

[GIA's VVS and VS page (8 August 2023)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/vvs-diamond-versus-vs-diamond/) says that in almost all cases VS inclusions cannot be seen with the naked eye, yet also that emerald cuts suit higher clarity grades. Our [eye clean guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/eye-clean-diamond-vs1-vs2-si1) compares VS1, VS2 and SI1.

## Emerald cut ratio: how long and narrow should it be?

Ratio is length divided by width, and GIA gives no single ideal. Its 2020 buying guide says emerald cuts, rectangular cushions and pears are most popular between 1.50 and 1.75 to 1, and that very long, thin stones are prone to breaking. Its 2025 shape guide gives no emerald ratio, so that is the only GIA figure we found.

Our three rings sit just under it: 7.89 ÷ 5.57 is about 1.42, 8.76 ÷ 5.87 about 1.49 and 7.78 ÷ 5.46 about 1.42. Our [ring designer](https://mazimo.ae/design) draws an emerald at 7.0 × 5.0 mm at 1 ct, a ratio of 1.40.

## How an emerald cut looks on a size 52 finger

A UAE size 52 finger is about 16.55 mm across (52 ÷ 3.14159), and share of the finger is the stone's width divided by that. Measured by their shorter side, two of our emerald cut centres take about 34 to 35 percent; the one set sideways takes about 47.

| Ring | Centre (L × W, mm) | Ratio | Setting | Share of a size 52 finger (centre only) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Emerald Bezel Solitaire Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-bezel-solitaire-ring) | 7.89 × 5.57 | 1.42 | Bezel on a plain band | About 34% (5.57 ÷ 16.55) |
| [Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-baguette-three-stone-ring) | 8.76 × 5.87 | 1.49 | Four claws, a tapered baguette each side | About 35% (5.87 ÷ 16.55) |
| [Emerald Faceted Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-faceted-ring) | 7.78 × 5.46 | 1.42 | Four claws, set sideways | About 47% (7.78 ÷ 16.55) |

These are centre sizes from our ring specifications on 20 October 2026; our ring pages round them to one decimal. Side stones add width, and we divided, we did not measure a hand. Only the Emerald Faceted Ring page says its stone is set sideways; for the other two we assumed the long side runs along the finger, which their pages do not state.

## Does an emerald cut look bigger than a round diamond?

Not in the two rings we compared: at the same card carat our emerald is longer and slimmer than our round but covers about the same area. GIA says oval, marquise and pear can look larger than a round of the same weight, and its shape guide does not say so of the emerald cut.

[IGI's carat weight page (28 July 2023)](https://www.igi.org/consumer-education/diamond-4cs/carat-weight/) does: it says shapes with little depth, such as emerald cuts and marquise, can look larger face-up than a round of the same weight, and it compares shapes by physical spread, the mean of length and width. These two rings do not clearly show it. The emerald's spread is about 7.3 mm ((8.76 + 5.87) ÷ 2) and the round's about 8.1 mm ((8.05 + 8.07) ÷ 2); spread averages the two sides, and our reading is that area is the fairer test, though we do not know which the eye follows.

Two rings are both shown as 2 ct: the [Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-baguette-three-stone-ring) and the [Round Solitaire Ring, 2 ct](https://mazimo.ae/product/round-solitaire-ring-1-96-ct). The emerald centre is about 8.76 × 5.87 mm and the round about 8.05 × 8.07 mm. Treating the round as a circle, π ÷ 4 × 8.05 × 8.07 is about 51.0 mm². The emerald's rectangle, 8.76 × 5.87, is about 51.4 mm², a ceiling because the cropped corners take a little away: at most about 1 percent more. The round is the slightly heavier stone, which favours it: this compares two rings, not a rule.

Our [size chart](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-size-chart-carat-mm) lists eight shapes. Our [shape size comparison](https://mazimo.ae/journal/which-diamond-shape-looks-biggest) ranks them by face-up area and allows for cropped corners with an assumed fill factor of 0.96 (0.96 × 8.76 × 5.87 is about 49.4 mm²), about 3 percent below the round's 51.0: close either way.

## Does an emerald cut diamond have a cut grade?

Not from GIA. [GIA's cut grade article (3 February 2026)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/gia-diamond-cut-grade-six-things-to-know/) says the round brilliant is the only shape that receives an official cut grade, and [its 2026 report guide](https://www.gia.edu/dam/jcr:2fb6ec66-085c-4106-9b7f-11ffc27b0438/8.5x11%20How%20to%20Read%20a%20Diamond%20Grading%20Report%202026.pdf) limits the grade to standard round brilliants in D to Z colours.

A GIA natural diamond report for an emerald cut instead carries the shape and cutting style, polish and symmetry graded Excellent to Poor, length × width × depth in millimetres and a proportion diagram, per that guide and [GIA's report explainer (9 November 2015)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/gia-diamond-grading-reports-understanding-diamond-cut-grades/). [IGI says](https://www.igi.org/igi-introduces-cut-grading-for-fancy-shaped-diamonds/) it added a cut grade to its reports for loose fancy shaped diamonds from 1 September 2022, so ask whether the IGI report you are offered shows one. For a lab grown stone, ask which report it has. Our [cut grade guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-cut-grade-excellent-vs-ideal) and [certificates guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-certificates-igi-gia-dubai) go line by line.

With no overall grade, use GIA's checks. [Its fancy shape buying guide (12 December 2013)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/purchasing-fancy-shaped-diamonds-holiday-buying-guide/) advises against rectangular stones whose corners are uneven, narrow or absent, or whose sides are not parallel, and the 2020 guide says rectangular cuts should match vertically and horizontally. Ask to see the stone or a video.

## Emerald cut bezel and claws: protecting the corners

An emerald cut has four cropped corners, and in our view the setting should cover each. [GIA's ring protection advice (26 September 2017)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-protect-your-diamond-engagement-ring/) says a bezel helps keep the centre stone in place and that V-shaped prongs or a partial bezel guard a stone's weak points and corners. It names princess, marquise, pear and heart shapes as more prone to chipping and does not mention the emerald cut. [GIA's chipping article (5 May 2016)](https://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research/how-protect-diamond-chipping) does: it says emerald cut corners are at higher risk and need adequate girdle thickness, and that bezels, partial bezels or V-shaped prongs protect corners better. [GIA's shape guide](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/guide-diamond-shapes-engagement-rings/) says cropped corners help prevent chipping in a radiant cut.

- **Bezel.** The [Emerald Bezel Solitaire Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-bezel-solitaire-ring) page says the bezel holds the stone along all four sides, with no claws to catch. Our [bezel vs prong guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/bezel-vs-prong-setting-engagement-ring) weighs what it hides against what it protects.
- **Four claws.** The Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring has a four-claw centre, and the Emerald Faceted Ring page says one claw sits at each corner. Claws leave more of the stone open and need checks: GIA suggests every six months, or yearly on your anniversary.
- **V-shaped prongs or a partial bezel.** None of our three emerald ring pages describes either, so ask us on WhatsApp what we can make.

## Emerald cut pros and cons

An emerald cut hides little, so it suits buyers who value clean lines and will read the grades closely. Our reading, built on GIA's points:

- **Pro: a clean, calm look.** GIA says the long, open facets put clarity and luster ahead of brilliance.
- **Pro: a slimming outline.** GIA says the elongated outline makes fingers look longer and slimmer.
- **Con: it hides little.** GIA says inclusions and colour are easier to spot, so grades need more attention.
- **Con: less sparkle.** GIA says the appeal of a step cut is its gleam, not brilliance.
- **Con: exposed corners.** GIA says emerald cut corners are at higher risk of chipping and need adequate girdle thickness, so the setting matters.

For sparkle that masks flaws, look at the radiant. For the look of more size, GIA names the [oval](https://mazimo.ae/journal/oval-engagement-ring-guide), [marquise](https://mazimo.ae/journal/marquise-engagement-ring-guide) and [pear](https://mazimo.ae/journal/pear-shaped-engagement-ring-guide).

## Emerald cut diamond ring in Dubai: our three rings

We make three emerald cut diamond rings, each made to order in UAE sizes 46 to 62 and in 18K white, yellow or rose gold. Each can carry a natural or a lab grown centre diamond: tell us which you prefer when you message us on WhatsApp.

- [Emerald Bezel Solitaire Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-bezel-solitaire-ring): 1.5 ct, about 7.89 × 5.57 mm, a bezel on a plain band, no side stones.
- [Emerald and Baguette Three Stone Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-baguette-three-stone-ring): 2 ct, about 8.76 × 5.87 mm, a four-claw centre with a tapered baguette of about 5.45 × 2.76 mm on each side. Our [three stone guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/three-stone-engagement-ring-guide) covers the side stones.
- [Emerald Faceted Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/emerald-faceted-ring): 1.5 ct, about 7.78 × 5.46 mm, set sideways in four claws on a broad band. [GIA's emerald cut ring page (20 September 2016)](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/diamond-emerald-cut-engagement-ring/) says an emerald cut can be set vertically or horizontally and calls the horizontal layout an east-west setting.

The nearest cousin is the [Baguette Signet Ring](https://mazimo.ae/product/baguette-signet-ring), a slim baguette of about 8.30 × 4.10 mm (a ratio of about 2.02) set sideways and flush in a signet frame.

None of these four rings has a camera try-on. To ask about seeing one, [book a viewing](https://mazimo.ae/appointment) at Al Manal Center in Deira, minutes from the Gold Souk, or preview an emerald at true size in our designer: [an emerald solitaire](https://mazimo.ae/design#style=solitaire&shape=emerald&ct=1.50&metal=white&dia=lab) or [an emerald three stone ring](https://mazimo.ae/design#style=trio&shape=emerald&ct=2.00&metal=white&dia=natural). The designer draws its own proportions, so ask which finished ring is closest.

[GIA says](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/how-to-determine-ring-size-tips-and-ring-size-chart/) fingers swell in the heat and that a wide band usually calls for a slightly larger size. Our [gold ring sizing guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/gold-ring-sizing-guide-uae) shows how to measure, and our [wedding band guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/wedding-band-guide-uae) rates a straight band beside an emerald solitaire as close or a small gap, so bring your band.

## Questions people ask

### What clarity should an emerald cut diamond be?

GIA recommends VS2 clarity or above for an emerald cut, with higher grades for stones of 2 to 3 carats or more. Our rule of thumb, not GIA's, is VS1 or better. Ask to see the plot and the stone.

### What colour grade should an emerald cut diamond be?

GIA recommends G colour or above for an emerald cut and, in its buying guide, suggests considering a higher colour grade for a step cut. Our own advice, not a GIA rule, is G or H in white gold and H to J in yellow or rose gold, which is looser than GIA's G: see our [colour guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/diamond-colour-grade-and-fluorescence).

### What is the ideal length to width ratio for an emerald cut?

GIA gives no ideal. Its 2020 buying guide says emerald cuts are most popular between 1.50 and 1.75 to 1. Our three rings run from about 1.42 to 1.49: judge by eye on your hand.

### Does an emerald cut look bigger than a round diamond?

Not in the two rings we compared. IGI says shapes with little depth, such as emerald cuts, can look larger face-up than a round of the same weight, yet our 2 ct emerald covers at most about 1 percent more area than our 2 ct round. Compare millimetres, not carats.

### Does an emerald cut diamond have a cut grade?

Not from GIA, which gives an overall cut grade only to standard round brilliants. A GIA natural diamond report for an emerald cut shows polish and symmetry, measurements and a proportion diagram. IGI says it added a cut grade for loose fancy shaped diamonds from 1 September 2022, so check whether the IGI report you are shown carries one.

### How much does an emerald cut engagement ring cost in Dubai?

It depends on the stone, whether it is natural or lab grown, the setting and the 18K gold, so we print no range here. Each ring's page shows its price: use the emerald filter on our [diamond rings page](https://mazimo.ae/shop/diamond-rings?shape=emerald), or read our [cost guide](https://mazimo.ae/journal/engagement-ring-cost-dubai-aed-guide).

### Do emerald cut diamonds chip easily?

The four corners are the exposed part. [GIA's chipping article (5 May 2016)](https://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research/how-protect-diamond-chipping) says emerald cut corners are at higher risk and need adequate girdle thickness, and that bezels, partial bezels or V-shaped prongs protect corners better. Ask about the girdle at the corners and how the setting covers each one.

### What is the difference between an emerald cut and a radiant cut?

Both are rectangles with cropped corners, but the emerald has long step facets and the radiant 70 brilliant-style facets. GIA says the radiant is more forgiving of inclusions and colour than step cuts.
